Is it only the more recent ones that you like?
What about The League of Gentlemen?
That's the film from 1960, not the more recent TV show of the same name
Steve
I could have quite easily used Google or another search engine to attempt to obtain a list of "similiar" films to the ones I have listed below, but this forum looks a more superior way of discovering new films.
I really love British Crime/Gangster films, but I haven't seen that many. Here are the ones I have seen and like:
Layer Cake
Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels
Rise Of The FootSoldier
RocknRolla
Rollin’ With The Nines
Snatch
The Bank Job
The Business
^ Based on this list, does anyone have any reccomendations for me?
For all I know, they could be the absoloute best of the bunch. Or they could be the worst, and there are some amazing ones I am yet to discover. I am hoping this thread will help me to work that one out.
Any help would be appreciated![]()

Based on your taste; In Bruges, Gangster #1 and Sexy Beast.
No it's not a conscious decision that I only like recent ones, it just so happens I haven't seen any older ones...yet.
It didn't actually dawn on me until I read your post, that the oldest film I listed was Lock Stock (1998).
I've heard good things about 'Get Carter' (70's I believe?) but haven't seen it. Thanks for your League Of Genetlemen suggestion I will attempt to watch it soon.
And thankyou DB7 for those, will also check them out.
A few more suggestions of older British Crime/Gangster films:
The Ladykillers (1955)
Odd Man Out (1947)
The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)
The Krays (1990)
Let Him Have It (1991)
Enjoy, they're all well worth watching
Steve
The very best one is The Long Good Friday.

For Gangsters try Sitting Target with Oliver Reed, The Squeeze with Freddie Star (don't be put off) and Brighton Rock is a great film. For a bit of crime Robbery and Prize of Arms with Stanley Baker, Loophole with Albert Finney, Sewers of Gold starring Ian McShane and Warren Clarke, Bit older Pool Of London and Prize of Gold all good stuff.
Payroll,Hell Is A City,The Good Die Young are three more the immediately come to mind
Again, thankyou for the replies. I will check them out in due course.
I'm ready for someone to dispute this, but I think Guy Ritchie is one of the best directors to make these sorts of films. Lock Stock, Snatch & RocknRolla are all films I love. I've even heard plans for a sequel to RocknRolla, which I hope doesn't happen. It was a good film, but easily the weakest out of the three I just listed.
Hopefully he will make another film of the same ilk though. (Crime/Gangster)
I love all the comedy elements to the films too.
Guy Ritchie is the best person to make Guy Ritchie films
Others have tried but he's very good at the Cockney geezer type of films like Lock Stock, Snatch etc.
But that's only a very small and recent part of the British Crime/Gangster genre
He's now moving into the Sherlock Holmes or Arthurian type of films
Steve
Some more that i have remembered,Never Let Go,Gideons Day,Tread Softly Stranger, the blue lamp,Sweeny !,The Squeaker,Return Of The Frog(and The Frog if it still exists)Inspector Hornleigh,Saloon Bar.I could go one as every time i remember one film it leads to about 10 others.
A good pair DVD double bills are Blackout/Bond of Fear and Marilyn/Stock Car.
Night and the City (1950) is the daddie of them all...
Night and the City: Soho on celluloid | Film | The Guardian
D.
McVicar, Villain, The Hit, The Limey, Mona Lisa, The Criminal, Performance, Face, Love Honour Obey
Two to add to the list by Nathan are "essex boys" (sean bean) and a terrible one called "hardmen" dont know the guys name's but one was in londons burning,(and should have stay'd there)
another is "lucky number sleven" i think it's british, i know it's cr@p,
all the olduns mentioned so far are great, ya dont need every other word to start with "F" for it to be enjoyable, good old days when coppers were someone you went to for help instead of a kicking and the bad guys were pretty decent chaps really
i watched "in bruges" for the second time the other day and think it a great film, Colin Farrel is outstanding. although it's pushing the boundry's of believeability when the other guy's still alive and communicating after falling that far onto concrete![]()
