Default Crime and the media

Hi there, my name is Adem and I am doing some research for school, into crime in the media and how it influences or doesn’t influence children. I thought this was a good subject area for me to study as of all the late gang and knife crimes going around at the moment.
Any thoughts out there to help me in my topic? Any opinion is valuable to me.

There was a very long and quite lively debate about this on this very forum a while ago.

Try having a look through through these threads.

Ye, those discussions could help me thanks; does anyone have any of their own opinions on if crime in the media is actually affecting our young viewers?

No, crime is a social problem and linking copycat events to the media is just lazy journalism. There is some glamourising of crime in stylistic thrillers and crime dramas but that's been the case for decades.

I'm of the opinion that current 'entertainment' reduces crime as potential rapscallions are staying in and watching movies or spending their entire lives plugged into some video game or another. At least here in the US. Petty crime consists of the thefts of game systems and big screen TVs as opposed to cars which I think supports my theory. More violent crime is invariably linked to the flourishing drug economy or to escalating domestic issues and therefore media independent.

Oddly news coverage of such events as school shootings I suspect encourages copycats.

Research by several different psychiatric and psychological study groups has proved that there is a link between the behaviour of young children and the types of stuff they watch on TV or play on games stations. The kids who regularly watch/use this material have been found to present with more unruly and aggressive behaviour than those who don't. These findings have been linked into other studies which indicate the likelihood that these ''unruly'' youngsters are more likely to offend when they reach adolescence/adulthood than the ''better behaved'' children. The TV material used in the research included news, documentaries and fiction programme.

You see this debate is interesting, I’ve been doing some individual surveys ect. I have found out that people’s common conception is that crime in films has a big effect on children and teenagers. Adults think that films such as kidult hood, Get rich or die trying have had a big influence on society and children and teenagers look on crime. Also how would you respond if I told you that the majority of crimes committed by people in London are of ages between 15-23?

I would say ''I'm not surprised''.

As I said in my earlier post, research has shown that if one is exposed often enough to ''anti-social'' material, it does have a definite negative effect. This is also the case where the ''anti-social'' element occurs in one's real-life as opposed to an abstract world viewed via TV/games/literature.
