Default National Identity in Film?

Is trainspotting a British or Scottish film? I'm looking at it in terms of 'national identity' and would be grateful for you help.

I'd have said it was very Scottish. It's set in Scotland and about Scottish people. The director, writer and many of the other crew are Scottish. How much more Scottish can a film be without resorting to tartan and bagpipes? :

But as it's Scottish, that also makes it British. Scotland was a part of Britain last time I looked.

I suppose a Scottish film is British in those terms, Steve.: :

But for instance, The Queen or Notes on a Scandal are always called British films - although these films are as different from Red Road as you can get.

My point I guess is that the 'English' film doesn't exist, as such. Perhaps it did with Merchant/Ivory, in that it was so obviously about the English. But the usual definition of British film tends to mean English film - not Welsh or Scottish and definitely not Irish.

Trainspotting is a Scottish film, I'd say.

Didn't stop it being terribly popular with 90s Londoners though.

Some films are still very English. It's usually a mistake or laziness on the part of the person describing them when they use British to exclusively mean English

To be fair the latter stages and closing shots are in London. It's like The 39 Step's in reverse.:

Speaking from a position of general ignorance.... my favourite position for exciting debate.... I thought they made films about India....

One of them has died?

Unless I'm wrong, Boyle is a Mancunian and Tufano is English. Very Scottish but Renton does follow a similar rebel, rehab, triumph, path to that of Alex in Clockwork Orange.

Default National Identity in Film?

Hey I was just looking for advice. I'm trying to look into celtic national identity in film. I can't seem to find any information on this tho.
Does anyone know of any books on either celtic or british national identity which'd be worth reading?

I can't think of any specific books on 'celtic identity', but there are several books on Irish Cinema that may include some useful material. Try looking for books by Kevin Rockett or Martin McLoone.

I would suggest that you buy Michael Balcons autobiography. He was someone who was one of the founding fathers of the British film industry and who strove to maintain the British identity of films he produced throughout his long career.I write this sitting in an office just 1 mile from his former Ealing Studios, probably the most identifiable of all British studios.

The Abbey Theatre in Dublin formed a theatrical focus for the reclaiming of 'Irish' identity I believe. The Abbey Theatre: About the Abbey - History. I'm guessing the Welsh Eisteddfodd movement would do it for them: Welcome - The National Eisteddfod of Wales

'Celtic' covers Scottish, Welsh and Irish doesn't it? I can't think what would combine all three of those in one movie but I'm sure someone else will know more.

these are all great places to start.
Yh Celtic covers Ireland, Scotland, Wales as well as Brittany, Cornwall and the Isle of Man (if interested you can find more information about these from the Celtic League)

Lifted from a recent e-bay listing:

Scotland in Film
by Forsyth Hardy
Hardcover, dust jacket, 6" x 8 3/4", 250 pages, new and in mint condition.
Illustrated with over 70 photographs.
From the dust jacket:

Scotland in Film is an analysis of how Scotland has been presented on the screen by producers of fictional films and documnetaries over the past sixty years. Early films were made by producers in Hollywood and London, with results owing more to myth than to reality. As the survey progresses it reflects the emergence of more and more Scottish film-makers and a concern with national expression.

It is a thought-provoking account not only for Scots everywhere but also for film-makers in other countries where an effort is being made to project a responsible and recognisable picture of national life and achievement. It adopts a chronological arrangement, with each film being summarised and placed in context, with a Filmography of 150 important films.
