At times there was an overt attempt to do so.
Take a look at the Ealing Films made between 1941 and 1946 (up to The Captive Heart) which looked at identity at all levels. Powell and Pressburger looked at regional identity. London Films perhaps for class identity, to an extent. |

There's a very good book on the subject by Jeffrey Richards which even has chapters on Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Lancashire.
