Equality between the sexes will never be achieved...on celluloid or in real life. What men gained on the swings women gained on the roundabouts but women are aiming pretty successfully for the swings as well nowadays!

What do you think Lucy?
Do you think that any of these films display inequality or promote it?
And if so, does that truly reflect society?

Of course there is inequality in modern film - against the man.

Most men are portraid as sex mad, go getting action men.
Women come across as slightly dumber people who will use their body more than their brains to get what they want - and the male falls for it every time.
Have you noticed that no matter how 'weak' women character's may initially appear in modern film they have this knack of always finishing on top of the plot. In all the modern films you've mentioned the heroine always wins the battle.
Men are supposedly left with egg on their face, bruised ego or a hard on.

Women may be shown as being the weaker sex but they use it to their advantage.
Who can truly work out what a woman is thinking at any given time? Impossible to calculate.
Yet you invariably know what the male is always thinking.....every 60 seconds I believe
Even your male superheroes cannot fight that. It's the kryptonite that can weaken any man (if he's straight that is). It's called female charm or sex appeal.

Women really defeat male ego's all the time and in true Hollywood fashion they always defeat the dumb male.
The sister's are doing it for themselves !

Yeah that's it...the "deadly female" tack only works with poor sap straight guys! Maybe that's why straight guys have so much animosity towards gay guys...because of their immunity!

Yes, it's definetly inequal as out of five movies only in one (Die Another Day) is the male the leading character, in the rest the male characters tend to be subordinate.

Seriously, though I have seen all except Clueless, at one time or another, I'm not that familer with them. Perhaps if you chose a selection of British movies I'll be more able to help you.

As I believe I said at the beginning of this discussion, the women are really in charge. They just let us think we are when it suits them. The sooner men realise that the sooner everyone will be happy.

To quote one of the many wonderful speeches from the TV series Coupling written by Steven Moffat. The lead character, Steve Taylor (Jack Davenport) is here having a moan because Susan has removed the lock from the door to the loo, and doesn't understand why Steve is so upset about it

Quote:
Susan: Men and toilets, the love that dare not speak its name. What's that about?
Steve: [slams hand down] We are men! Throughout history, we have always needed, in times of difficulty, to retreat to our caves. It so happens that in this modern age, our caves are fully plumbed. The toilet is, for us, the last bastion, the final refuge, the last few square feet of man-space left to us! Somewhere to sit, something to read, something to do, and who gives a damn about the smell? Because that, for us, is happiness. Because we are *men*. We are different. We have only one word for soap. We do not own candles. We have never seen anything of any value in a craft shop. We do not own magazines fill of pictures of celebrities with all their clothes *on*. When we have conversations, we actually take it in turns to talk! But we have not yet reached that level of earth-shattering boredom and inhuman despair that we would have a haircut *recreationally*. We don't know how to get excited about... really, *really* boring things, like ornaments, bath oil, the countryside, vases, small churches. I mean, we do not even know what, *what* in the name of God's *ass* is the purpose of potpourri! Looks like breakfast, smells like your auntie! Why do we need that? So please, in this strange and frightening world, allow us one last place to call our own. This toilet, this blessed pot, this... fortress of solitude. You girls, you may go to the bathroom in groups of two or more. Yet we do not pass comment. We do not make judgement. That is your choice. But we men will always walk the toilet mile... alone.
[audience applauds]
Susan: Would you like me to put the lock back on the toilet door, dear?
Steve: Would you mind?
Susan: You should have asked.
Now that's a series you should study to see where the real inequality lies.

Steve

Whilst I have my sympathies, I think you're talking about a very specific type of film here. Recent British films like 'Vera Drake', 'Ae Fond Kiss', 'Shaun of the Dead', 'Young Adam', etc., don't bear it out. If you go to see big dumb action films (and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, mind), dumb action is what you'll get.

My tongue was slightly in my cheek Jennie
As long as there is a sex theme running through a film's storyline (99.9% of the time i'd say) then female's will always have their wicked way with the male's ego.
