ps. I know that other people have started threads about women in film too, but I have to start my own for my research or it isn't counted as my own work!
Sorry :)

Sorry :)
Why not do it really properly and put forward a few ideas of your own which others can then comment on. That'd be much better rather than just collecting other people's opinions.

For the actress from about 50 years ago. Have a look at the work of Deborah Kerr, Jean Simmons, Pamela Brown and Kathleen Byron. Deborah is probably the most famous of those four, closely followed by Jean. But don't let simple fame mislead you. They were all great performers.

I'd like to add Wendy Hiller. Also perhaps choose two with the same nationality and film background, ie both working in the British or American film industry .

For ease of accessing resarch material (there are better actresses but less ahs been said on them) i'd go for Marilyn Monroe (blonde bimbo role, restrictions from being under conrtact) and possibly sigourney weaver (varied roles and genres, hard ass and beauty etc) IMO jodie foster in silence of the lambs was one of the best female roles and portrayls in recent film, showed strangth and vunerability and sexism in the workplace brilliantly

I am a great admirer of Sigourney Weaver. I don't think I've seen her give a bad performance. Ghostbusters and more especially Galaxy Quest also showed she could do comedy very well. Jodie is always brilliant of course, and Marilyn is Marilyn

But we do sometimes like to make the students work a little for what they get from us. And this is a BRIT Movie Forum so lets support a few British actresses. Also, a tutor will often automatically give a few extra marks just for making the report about someone more unusual rather than yet another paper on the usual suspects.

How about Margaret Leighton and Tilda Swinton?

I'll give you 10 marks just for the suggestion Nick.

Or Wendy Hiller / Tilda Swinton?

I've had more than one dream about Carole Lombard recently, including some strange Expressionist interpretation of 'Hands Across the Table' (which I've never seen, and is from 1935, so never mind).
While on a brief vacation, I caught a nifty B chiller on cable, called Red Eye, and marveled at the down to earth fantasy of having little Rachel MacAdams play a fierce feminist-wish-fulfilment character.
Hope this was useful!
