What do people think about the representation of women in bond films?



Can you think of any really good positive representations of women in Bond movies or any really horrible sexist representations?

Personally, I don`t think they are any positive reps of women in bond movies. Saying that, I can look at it with tounge in cheek as I can with the carry on movies. I can`t take these films seriously but we can`t deny that sexism is part of our society although there doesnt seem to be as heavy as it was in the 1970`s. To me its just a touch of historical attitude still on our screens and should just be taken as such.



You may want to research into feminist books and articles about the `male gaze` to look at how they use camera angles to portray women as objects of desire. They go a bit far with their conclusions in my opinion but still, Its quite enlightening and may help with your research.

Not even Judi Dench's 'M'. I think the original gender in the novels was for a male head of MI5 but they obviously drew influence from the appointment of Stella Rimington. She tolerates rather than admires Bond, and sees him as fairly disposable.

This was one I debated about I must admit. But what struck me most on the screen with this character is the image of the sexy dominate older woman.



You are right though DB7, I am sure there are positive elements to her character if you analyse long enough, and its best to be objective in research so different people will come to different conclusions.

They were really tongue in cheek (were the very same names given in the Ian Fleming novels I ask ? ) although some of the names in the 60's/70's were not all bad though.

James Bond is the "machiest" type, of course....we, girls, know it !!...but we also know he is so funny (....as in "Kill Bill", Umma Thurmann(it's not the good orthographe, I know) escapes from 50 killers, a shout of salt, her funeral, duel in samouraï codes.....she is the real JB's girl !! (but she doesn't care !)
