Movies are a business, and films made for cinema release are, more often than not, aimed at whatever is regarded as the primary audience at the time.



During the forties and fifties there was a much larger female audience, especially in the war years when a large proportion of the men were away fighting. Thus actresses such as Joan Crawford and Bette Davies became major stars in films aimed at women, rather than being objectified as sex objects (which had happened to both actresses, especially Crawford, in the past).



Today, the major movie audience is seen as the teenage boy, and the only female he's going to pay money to see is one dressed in tight spandex in rubbish like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

That's interesting Alex. What role do you think censorship played (censorship was my film disertation subject back in college days)?

lauren mulfays male gaze would agree with you. it isnt nessesarily need to make the film successful but it helps. It will appeal to a more vast audience and make the film more successful

Well im mean that in them days censorship would be more strict that what it is nowadys. Therefore many films are not getting more and more revealing in the sense of my question.

Story must prevail. If that requires a sexy woman, then stick it in. In life, there are sexy women, so what are we afraid of.



Sexy women and sexy men.



Its obviously going to help sales.



Otherwise the cinema would be full of films of obese people oozing pus and facial hair.
