Thought there might be some interest in this...
University of Hull: Department of Film Studies NEW…MA IN BRITISH CINEMA Main teaching staff: Professor Neil Sinyard Dr Iris Kleinecke Dr Dave Rolinson Dr Melanie Williams Visiting Professor Brian McFarlane Modules likely to include: •British Cinema: Research Methods and Approaches •Projecting Britain: Ealing Studios •Women in British Cinema •Adaptation and British Cinema: Graham Greene •Issues and Themes in Contemporary British Cinema: 1980-present •Writing and Presenting a Seminar Paper •Dissertation This distinctive new MA programme will be the first Masters degree in the UK to focus specifically on British cinema, responding to the growth of interest in the national cinema that has been reflected in teaching, research and publication over the last twenty years. It will draw upon the research strengths of its staff in this area, whose publications in recent years have included: co-editorship of an innovative series of monographs on British Film Makers for Manchester University Press, individual monographs on directors such as Jack Clayton and Alan Clarke; contribution to and editorship of key critical anthologies and encyclopaedias on British cinema; chapters in books and articles in refereed journals as well as extensive contributions to the British Film Institute’s online publications on British cinema and directors; tv and radio appearances and dvd commentaries. All of these have helped build Hull’s reputation as one of the key institutions for the study of British cinema and television. Another distinctive feature is its inclusion of television drama as a vital aspect of British film culture; and its examination of local connections with British film, through the invitation of guest speakers, the use of local archival material and the exploration within particular modules of the important contribution made by Hull people to the history of British cinema and television (see Film Studies departmental website for more information - http://www.hull.ac.uk/filmstudies/FilmHome.htm). In line with the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s growing emphasis on research training in MA programmes, the MA in British Cinema will also feature several modules devoted to the development of research skills and presentation skills that will be good preparation for any further postgraduate research, as well as highly useful transferable skills. "Woman in British Cinema". God almighty, do we still care? Did feminist revolution not happen over 30 years ago? Last time I looked in on Germaine Greer she was so bored of it all she had gone back to washing dishes.

Will the course include research into women's roles during the silent period as actresses and behind the camera as editors, scriptwriters, producers etc which is a very neglected area of research. Although UEA students have been studying early British Cinema. Its about time that their should be a course covering all aspects of British Cinema.

The MA course looks very interesting.....However, to succeed I expect one would be expected to engage in a feminist discourse in relation to British film...
I am not sure that I am well equipped to do this, being neither female, young or highly impressionable (and rather set in my traditional ways of thinking) ! |
