Don't worry I'm not expecting you to write my PhD thesis but those of you with encyclopaedic knowledge of British films may be able to help.

I'm looking for a comprehensive list of British films set in the 1980's but made in later decades. There have been a lot recently like Son of Rambow, This is England and Clubbed. Without boring the a*** off you in respect of my chosen subject its basically about a revisionist view of 80s through British film.

Any titles especially obscures ones would be appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Hate to do this piecemeal...

I finally caught up with Mike Leigh's Career Girls a few weeks ago, so it came to mind. Wonderful! Ample flashbacks cover the girls' university days, in the 1980s.

Michael Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People also spends some time in the 1980s.

    Hope this is helpful.

Perhaps it would be easier if you tell us what films you already know about - otherwise we'll be duplicating your research!

Cheers Steve there are some there I haven't heard of so I will check them out.

A couple more I've got are Starter for 10 and Rise of the Footsoldiers which has an 80s sequence.

I'm thinking I may have enough to do a chapter on hooliganism. New film in production at the moment called Away Days set in the 1980s. Can anyone remember if Football Factory or The Firm were set in the 1980s. I'm afraid it must be 80's 'cos I'm linking it to the social changes caused by Thatcherism.

The Firm with Gary Oldman was made in 1988 and was set in its own day.

I think the 80s actually started in 1979.

Harold, the best of the 80s were the history films from Lady Jane and Chariots of Fire to Absolute Beginners, Little Dorrit, Henry V and Scandal, etc. Here is a list:

British films of the 1980s - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A few titles of 80s movies in 80s would include Local Hero, A Fish Called Wanda and How to Get Ahead in Advertising.

Also, I think TV Inspector Morse was a time capsule for 80s/90s in Britain. Last Seen Wearing or Deceived by Flight, I think were the best of the 80s shows.

Another TV programme that had movie like influence was Smiley's People. It was the follow up to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. While the book came out in 79, it was very 80s. The show was early 80s.

Being a child of the 80s myself, there was a lot of 60s retro and historical films were at their zenith. Nostalgia was at its height, which tended toward the upbeat. By the late-80s, the tone of cynicism again took the tone of film. The result was the 90s (those who were there know what I mean).

Also consider movie videos. That was very 80s. I remember Duran Duran, U2, etc.

The early ones had clever story lines.

The Football Factory was set in the present day (i.e. 2004) but you should definitely check out The Business, made by and starring most of the same personnel. One of the best soundtracks ever and plenty of iconic images like Porsche 928's, Fila tracksuits etc. There's a decent behind the scenes documentary on there as well which shows how they went about obtaining the correct fashions (off eBay!) Just a quite note that The Business is set on the Costa Del Sol. Nevertheless it still gives a flavour of 80s Britain.
