Default Feminist films

Hey everyone,
Just a quick note to ask what feminist films you would recommend for me to watch as good examples of the portrayal of feminism in film. Also recommendations of films by female directors would be welcome.
Thanx
Becstar

This sounds like a homework question you would like us to answer....

It's along time since I've seen it but there was a Gracie Fields film which I seem to remember finished with her, linking arms with hundreds of other women, as they marched out the factory gates..... or down a street. I think it must have been the one that made/utilised her 'Sally from the Alley' song. Haven't the faintest idea now what the subject matter of the movie was but that image of women en masse has stuck with me for some reason.

Try 'The Weaker Sex' with Ursula Jeans and Cecil Parker. Only weaker in the physical sense. Portrays women at their finest.

It's not British, but THELMA AND LOISE is the definitive modern radical feminist film.

Boy, I wish that wasn't your idea of a "definitive" movie.

The Gentle Sex...wartime propaganda I suppose, but a contemporary portrayal of women in the army , WW2. Get past the patronising intro from Leslie Howard, and you're in the meat of the film. Watch the Lilli Palmer character closely. Similar themes in Millions Like Us, but this time the women are being trained for munitions factory work....or 2000 Women, British women interned in France doing their bit for the war effort. For more resourceful and brave women, try A Town Like Alice, Carve Her Name With Pride......Tenko if you are allowed to bring Telly into it.

I think Basic Instinct is probably THE definitive feminist film.

The Last Seduction is one of my favourite films from 1990's and would certainly qualify in that bracket too.

My late Grandmother was a mill worker up here in Bolton. She died 1991. I remember her once talking about the day Gracie filmed outside her mill. She said Gracie linked arms with some of the real mill workers for the march sequence, who had a field day at the excitement of it all. I need to confim with my Mum and Aunt for the locations, name of film, date et al. By happy coincidence we are all at a wedding this Saturday, so I should be able to find out more.

This would have been "Sing As We Go" 1934.
