After the comparative commercial failure of Tusk (it still sold 4 million copies) and the dispiriting worldwide tour (a live double LP was released to recoup some of Warner's $1 million outlay) Stevie and Lindsey went off to record solo LPs (Bella Donna and Law and Order respectively). It looked as if the Fleetwood Mac saga had finally come to an end. But Mick wouldn't let the band die without a fight, and he managed to persuade Lindsey and a reluctant Stevie to return for another LP, Mirage (Warner Bros 1982). The LP was a return to radio-friendly soft rock, but was much better than anyone had a right to expect (especially as it would be assumed that two of the songwriters would have no new quality material). Christine's Hold Me was a beautiful pop song with delightful piano and a great use of backing vocals, Lindsey's Can't Go Back is a highlight with its new wave phased guitars, while Stevie managed one classic with Gypsy, a huge hit single.

Every once in a while I get blown away by a new song or band I'd not heard before, as is the case here with this Swedish duo "First Aid Kit" which Jane heard about on Radio 2. Whilst doing her you-tube research she also noticed one of them bears a striking resemblance to Jenny Agutter....
Beautiful vocals and some great lyrics bring these two chosen songs into a very definite category....

    Find out the info here........

Yes it's a beautiful song, I like a lot his duets with Shane McGowan (What a wonderful world ) and with PJ Harvey, also the "progressive" choral song Death is not the end from the Murder Ballads album.

In tribute to Greg Ham, flautist for Men at Work, who was found dead yesterday (see link): http://="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/e...-arts-17767264. His flute riff on Down Under got the band into trouble sadly when they were sued for plagiarism. They claimed it was a subconscious error and not deliberate. They lost, and so songwriting copyright is now shared.

The fact that both Lindsey and Stevie regarded Mirage (1982) as a temporary comeback was evidenced by the decision to restrict the Mirage Tour in Autumn 1982 to 29 cities only in the US. For the next 4 years there was no new Mac product as Lindsey and Stevie pursued their various solo careers, and even Christine released a solo LP. Stevie was the most successful, with her no.1 singles and LPs she had no need of the Fleetwood Mac mothership. It was Mick's bankruptcy that led him to call his former comrades-in-arms to return for one last time to record Tango in the Night (Warner Bros 1987), which started life as a Lindsey solo LP. However, Lindsey refused to tour to promote the LP whilst oddly Stevie agreed to. Thus this classic line-up finished, but at least they did so on a high.

Christine's Everywhere had an excellent promo video but sadly the upload is of poor audio quality, shame as it's great! Lindsey collaborated with Christine on You and I, Part 2 (can you guess the US TV show theme that's used here?) and Stevie co-wrote with Sandy Stewart the excellent Seven Wonders.

    Cheers Brigger.....
I can play that first clip fine, but the second one wont work as I have to wait ages for things to buffer...
Normally I have too start a clip then press pause while I go off and mow the lawn or re-tile the bathroom. Its not to bad on You-tube because I can at least pause so buffering can continue).......but that doesn't seem to be the case with other sites (like clip 2)...
No matter, very much enjoyed that first clip of them in East London.....
We like them so much we've already bought both there CD's so we can play them in the car...
    Cheers

    Welcome back, Brigger

The Surprise Return of New World

I've just finished my latest post at the 'Lift Off (Series 4)' thread, complete with the now-customary links to songs featured in each episode. Fascinating to research. For example, I never knew that the original version of Wimoweh, adapted from an African tune, was by The Weavers - again. They were first to record quite a few well-known classics. Kisses Sweeter Than Wine was one but I may have to return to Wikipedia to be reminded of others.

The Big Discovery today was another rare performance from New World. It is only a few weeks
since I found a clip of them singing Tom Tom Turn Around. This was the group's other big hit:

    New World - Sister Jane

    #9 in 1972

Also on the 26th April 1972 edition of Lift Off were Stavely Makepeace, who had more success with their 'spin-off' band Lieutenant
Pigeon (Mouldy Old Dough was No. 1 for four weeks that year). I'd never heard the track before this afternoon but really like it:

Stavely Makepeace - Walking Through the Blue Grass

    Didn't Chart, alas.
