    Yes, it's a very strange metaphor, a clockwork orange, isn't it? I was born in the Mechanical Age but never came across one. Whoever would want one, apart from maybe the Tate Modern?

    The book makes it clear what the phrase means. The film doesn't.

    I read the book several times as a teenager. It is of course clear that Alex's being a guinea pig for the "aversion therapy" has made him less than human, but I don't recall the metaphor of the title ever being spelled out or explained in the book. It is a mixed metaphor to say the least - somewhat surprising, considering the usual intellectual precision of the author.
