I don't think it is, although it might be. It's hard to positively identify where slang comes from as it's usually not written down for the first few decades of use. The phrase 'flicks' has certainly been in use in this country for a very long time though.

According to Wikipedia 'flicks' is of English origin ....

''A film (movie), so-called due to the flicker of the image''

''Flicks is an old English expression referring to the Cinema or building where films are shown. Example usage, "Are you going to the flicks tonight?". Less often used today. More recently replaced with the words cinema or "The Pictures" (which is in turn derived from "the picture house").''

Nothing to do with Scottish geezers....... I mean guisers..... is it?

Why did that old trade magazine spell cinemamatograph with a k ? Seems a bit German.............

How come 'movies' never became 'talkies'........

I recall Wreckless Eric sang, "Can I take ya to the flicks/See a cheap and nasty film" once upon a time. Obviously they only had American films at his local flea-pit.

Guisers ? What do you mean?

'Kine Weekly' or 'Kine Monthly' in German .... or something like that. My brother had piles of them all over the place.

It was just a fashion in the early days of cinema. Quite a few cinemas called themselves the Kinema, or even the Electric Kinema. The trade magazine just kept that style after everyone else had agreed to start it with a 'C'. They probably thought they were being closer to the Greek origins of the prefix 'Cine' (or 'Kine') or something like that.
