Dont get me wrong i have had some wonderful trades and i have bought some copies through here and met some wonderful people who has just sent them to me when i asked about a title DB7 you being one my hero when i was looking a copy of the Ghoul and he sent it to me with a nice note, in general i have had a great experiance on here with getting copies im only saying there are a few who do ask well above the odds but thankfully they are few and far between..

Its so much better if you can trade but of course this is not always possible if the person you are trying to trade with has a huge list.

if I get asked for anything over a fiver I dont bother

Aww bless yer cotton socks. I'd agree that it's the exception rather than the rule, and the vast majority are seeking titles they simply wish to view again or have perhaps never seen rather any financial incentive. Also, if one person possesses a title you seek, chances are others have it too.

In my murky pre-forum days, I depended on occasional trips to the UK, hand-outs from visiting friends and EBay for the odd gem from the Golden Age of British film. Trouble was, EBay (and Amazon) wouldn’t accept my Asia-based credit cards – even on a dollar account, and most sellers didn’t want to ship to Japan or later Thailand anyway. A few intrepid sellers would accept cash stuffed into a greeting card: nudge, nudge! A kind Danish gent offered to buy for me, but he wouldn’t take a fee and I didn’t like to bother him too much. I missed a lot of excellent films.
On the forum I prefer to trade, sometimes offering 2 or 3 for 1 DVD to help with the extra postage, or including blanks. I’ve only paid once: $15 for 6 Warner quota quickies which I think was generous of the seller.
As for ‘rare’: of course there are rare films sought after by collectors but I suppose the term is relative depending on whether you are within the BBC/PBS/Turner Classic envelope or out here beyond the pale. My local cable provider labels Terminator 2 an ‘old classic’ and offers back-to-back ‘classic’ Van Damme movies.
I see UK television is showing The Blue Lamp this week: sigh.
I’m not complaining: I like my work, which requires me to live abroad, but I do miss the BBC, excellent book, film and record shops, Eccles cakes….sigh.
Before the internet things were very bleak for ex-pats; we depended on radio, the puny resources of the British Council or short-lived experiments like the BBC taped compilations of the mid-80s.
With file-sharing and film sites like this we can now revel in the major works of precious British national treasures (Pete and Dud, Humph on Clue), marvel at vignettes of happy family life (Shameless) and explain peculiar(ly) British institutions to local friends (Rolf Harris).
I’ve not met any greedy graspers; the people I’ve traded with on the forum have been friendly, open-handed and patient.

If a film is genuinely rare you expect to pay for it.I would always like to trade but having been collecting on film tape and disc for over 50 years it is alas unlikely with a couple of exceptions that anyone has anything i dont already have

I have always found it a comfort that I have never had to resort to ebay to get hold of Brit films because if you can't find it on this forum then it is most likely unavailable.Everyone that I have dealt with has been so helpfull & generous and I have never been asked a silly price for a film.

I'm just curious, why do people on here collect movies? For the act of collecting, or to actually see the movie?

The reason I ask is that I collect soundtracks, and I do so because I want to listen to the music. It annoys me that some soundtracks have only been released in limited quantities, and you have to pay ridiculous amounts to buy CDR copies of them. For instance "Young Sherlock Holmes" on CDR can cost £100 on eBay.

Now, if you have a bootleg of something rare and someone else wanted a copy, why charge anything over a nominal fee? You're not losing anything, and you've made someone else happy? The only reason I can see is because you're collecting to make money, not because you love the movies.

Or something.

PS. I've had a long day and might be spouting drivel :)

Seeing the film for me. Maybe because I've seen a reference to it in a cinema book, the story intrigues me or I'm a fan of somebody involved. Unfortunately I like early comedies and thrillers, and 50s second features, and there's very little chance of these getting terrestrial or satellite airings nowadays.

To see the film. Often films that I've seen at a festival or other screening. But when you watch them in public you can't ask the projectionist to stop and rewind for a bit. When I have my own copy I can do that even though I do prefer to see them in a big cinema.

Most of the films in my collection are from the 1940s & 50s and they don't get shown on TV, or at cinemas, very often.

To see the film. Having the opportunity again to see films that I enjoyed from the 40s and 50s is a real treat for me and I really appreciate the opportunity.
