...you can't knock some of the people who charge a fee for discs as opposed to trade. Sure the majority in my experience seem profit-driven and at times even a tad greedy but there are some serious/hardcore collectors out there who not only spend months and even years scouring the globe for rare films and then pay HUGE amounts of money for the video originals but there are also those that do some serious detective work and find old 3/4" and 1" master tapes in old vaults and pay good money for them. Those types of collectors, in my view, are entitled to seek some kind of monetary return (however small in scope compared to what they paid in finances, effort and time) as those who stand to benefit from having a copy would only otherwise circulate it anyway free of charge (which they can afford to do seeing as they never put in all the groundwork and funds) or profit from it themselves. In my experience, those who have spent considerable amounts of time, sweat and money uncovering some serious rarities/collector pieces have rarely enjoyed any of the accolades, gratitude or rewards they deserve as usually others profit from their discoveries and take the credit. Easy for many to say that "as long as the films are circulated and enjoyed by all" that everything is fine, but they are often not the ones who did all the footwork and paid the price for years of hunting!
Personally though, even though i have sold some copies on rare occasions (when i was a fulltime parent to my son and had little money for Xmas, etc.) i have always prefered to trade. I enjoy finding rare films and exchanging them with likeminded collectors who have stuff that i need or want in return. I have some incredibly rare films in my collection as well as some that have never had home-entertainment format release (Super-8mm, Video, Laserdisc, VCD, DVD or other), some that have never had so much as a cinema release and even some that are considered 'lost'. I trade for similar rarities but there is no way i would be happy to trade something like a 'lost' gem or some ultra-rare Euro rarity done for me from a friend's personal 1" Betacam master for a DVD-R copy of something that is fairly easy to find... It's all relative i guess! |

some of us do not have the sizeable collections that other's have so sometimes we could never acquire something if people would not let us try to buy it. I find myself looking for perhaps a particular actor's work and if I want it bad enough I will buy it if I can. I have made some wonderful contacts on many groups who only charge the cost of the disk and shipping but if people want money for something I don't really blame them. One can never be sure how long it took them to find it in the first place or what money they have into it. If something is rare and wanted by someone then it will definitely be worth something to whoever will sell it and whoever wants to buy it. If it is too high for your comfort level don't buy it.

I prefer to "trade only" because of the problem of naming a fair price. However when the person really does have nothing to trade then a sensible solution is to suggest they send you a blank disc and an s.a.e. (This seems fair to me - they cover the cost and, more importantly, do the organising; and you provide the copy. Apart from the wear & tear on your equipment, you're not losing anything.) If they can't get that together, you have to ask how much they really wanted the film in the first place

If I have anything that anyone wants, then yes I will trade, and if you don't have anything I fancy, maybe we could trade for a packet of Ginger Nuts or Heinz Salad Cream. How I miss the golden delights.

Hi, my first real post since joining up so hope you dont mind me adding my 10 cents worth, i've bought quite a few copys since starting to transfer my old VHS films over to DVD, mostly replaceing stuff that was too duff to bother with, personally i would'nt pay more than £5 for a home copy or £10 (ish) for factory sealed, the exception was a japanese film "yamato" from the USA (£20 ish), i dont buy from ebay add that sound "dodgy" (forign) and one way to tell is ask a question and useually you can tell by the way the reply is typed, ie- text talk, pidgeon english, misspelling, etc, always avoid those, sellers that charge high amounts can only do so if someone buys, most of my films (B/W) were fron the telly so i would.nt dream of selling copys as the picture quality is good enough for me but not for buyers, i've found a good guy (from ebay) that does 4 copys for £10 inc post which i think is pretty reasonable,
so as a rule of thumb, never pay an amount you cant afford to kiss goodby to |
