Exclamation Advice for those trading titles

This is merely a broad piece of advice to established users when trading with 'newbies'.

Be wary when trading with people who have only recently joined the site and have only made posts requesting titles. If you do decide to supply a new member ensure you receive payment/trade before sending any goods, and try to limit any potential loss of money by not sending multiple titles and avoiding expensive overseas postage.

We could 'name and shame' but such people will just create multiple accounts and fake names.

I have been very fortunate in finding cherished films through our good members, yet blind trust is never advised.

Naming and shaming that included a street address or postal code might be an alternative to consider. Screen names change - it's a bit more difficult to keep changing a shipping address.

I would not enjoy seeing my street name & number listed, but if I did someone wrong, the consequences of my wrong-doing should be part of my actions.

I received a wonderful 'gift' from someone who didn't include their identification on the package - it's probably from one of my repeat senders, but I've been horrified that I can't thank that person - I couldn't tell who it came from! argh... and for their part, they've been too gracious to send me a nastygram "Why didn't you say THANKS?!!" Ooooh, that was YOU! Thank you, thank you!

My experience of trading with members of this board has been very positive, but the advice given is sensible. Some years ago I traded with someone I thought was a Canadian collector - but within days the titles I had sent were being posted on ebay from -surprise, surprise- an ebay user in Canada. Coincidence? - I don't think so!

I understand that frustration. I spent a month or two in the old-radio-show trades until I learned about the Torrent-type sites, and then 'trade' wasn't really the issue.

Ultimately, my hurt feelings were based on (1) I'd spent money before I became more educated and could find all those files for free, and (2) I had to admit that my real goal was to have the art appreciated by more, not less. Hopefully, if they sell stuff on EBay, maybe the Buyer will get their copy and undercut the price, and sell twice as many to recover their initial investment.

Spawning a pyramid scheme until everyone who's interested in the product has it, and the market for 2nd- and 3rd-hand goods dry up.

When I find people bidding on old radio shows that I know are free and public-domain, I can usually contact them with directions for them to get it for free. Then, if they want to pay for it, fine. It may be easier for them.

I'm glad that there are enough great collectors here to keep some of these treasures from being lost forever.

To be fair even bittorrent relies on sharing. If only a few are supplying titles and everybody else leeching then there's every chance those doing all the giving will become disillusioned and walk away.

I'm sure a few on here are members of UKNova, which is a torrent site but like this place devotes itself to UK output. (tho it's often tricky to join:)

Hi i think this is a great idea, putting postcodes up so we know not to send anything to people in these post codes as they cant change a post code. Also do not let anyone send to anyone without submitting a post code first this way we can be certain that we are not being fiddled.

The I-TRADER value system is close to dealing with this issue but some administrator could be a clearinghouse of shipping street-names or post-codes.

However, I am not sure I'd volunteer an admin to do that. There's another way.

I have respect for the Scarlet Letter form of punishment. I'd hate to wear one, and I endeavor never to do that. If you feel like I've abusing our trading relationship, I fully expect that my name and address would be passed around among your trading friends.

EDIT: I was a bit too much of a mama-bear...

I consider myself a newbie on this site and at first I joined because of my interest in reading about films. I would certainly not be interested in getting hold of films to exploit by selling them on ebay and the like.
I have already had one copy of a film for which I am grateful and was purely for my own nostagic interest which is the main reason for acquiring hard to find films.
I hope that someone will be interested in something I got one day.

I sent someone (on another forum) a copy of a rare, and unreleased film from the 1940's - when I initially offered the film I got a reply saying that they had just sent £40 to someone in Holland and they had spent the money and never sent the film, so were initially dubious of my request until I said they could have it gratis.

I sent them the film and I never got even a thank you.

Well really...............
