Default Introduction

Hi I came across this forum today whilst trying to find a dvd of Bendon chase which I read as a child and wanted to read and shown to my own. Does anyone still have a copy of the dvd?
Kind Regards Airehome

Default hello to all

hello just found the forum so here i go i love british war films i have been into them from childhood as my dad was in WW2 so he used to tell me what was right and wrong.
he even told me if the uniforms were being worn wrong you know if the belts were upside down.
i am afraid i love them i like a few with yanks in but not many i can still remember dad shouting at the tv as he was there and there was no bloody yanks there he stood up and had a major fit and stormed out the front room i can remember errrol flynn was in it.
i used to tape them off the tv on betamax then vhs and now tring to replace them on dvd but some i dont seem to find or i do find them but no spare cash.
nothing better than putting the kettle on and watching a good film when there all out.

kindest regards
stargazer

Reccomendation to all new members: Any lists of films, to be popular and an OK person, always list A Canterbury Tale. Do not know why but check the posts and see if I am not at least a little bit right.

Lots of people do list "A Canterbury Tale" as one of their favorites, because it really is IMHO a great film.

To suggest to new members that they should list it as one of their favorites, so that they will become "popular and an ok person" is really rather stupid.

Aww, don't you think you're popular and an OK person?

When you said you didn't like it nobody said that was wrong or bad of you, they (mainly me) just asked what it was that you didn't like about it.

You're entitled to your own opinion

I love A Canterbury Tale, a bona fide classic ..... it's A Matter Of Life and Death that left me cold. After all the recommendations and 'hype', for want of a better word, I found it rather disappointing.

Welcome to all new members ... and remember to have a look at the features section where there is a rather splendid essay about the great Maxwell Reed.

I did not say I did not like it. I said in one post the cinemaphotography was outstanding and it was OK. I wanted originally to convey my mystification as to its promotion to A++++ excellence. But oh lets not start again.
Welcome new members to a lively home for lovers of good cinema.

OK, OK, stop banging your head
You said that there were parts that you weren't keen on.

But who gave it the A++++ excellence rating?

To me, "A Matter of Life and Death" is not a preference between the few P&P's films that I've seen.....because I don't think David Niven is a great actor, even if this character suits him well. The best part for me is the "trial in heaven" one.....
The film maybe reminds me Frank Capra, whom I'm not really found of.....

Moon.

One of the genres I like is fantasy and I include A Matter of Life and Death in that and after accepting that it is a fantasy, the film is well constructed and the plot inventive and quite novel. David Niven is .. David Niven and plays...David Niven type characters very well indeed but Robert Livsey, I could listen to him speak all day.
Do you remember him doing a piece celebrating the Queen's coronation? I was struck by the quality of his voice.

David Niven was very good at playing the character called David Niven. he played that role on and off stage

There are some great comments about Roger Livesey's voice on the IMDb message board for IKWIG:

bgh48 (Fri Oct 27 2006 15:13:38)
Brad Pitt? George Clooney? Sean Connery? Paul Newman? Robert Redford? Matthew McConnahy? These screen sex symbols pale beside velvet-voiced, steady-as-she-goes, pipe-smoking, quiet but ardent Scot Roger Livesey in this film, one of the most romantic ever made. When he tells Wendy Hiller, after they both listen to a Celtic song, "you're the girl for me", that about wraps it all up for me. Women, do you agree with me??

doglady45 (Fri Oct 27 2006 23:47:59)
Absolutely, totally agree, weak at the knees or what?

SandySmith (Mon Nov 6 2006 22:41:00)
Yep, he'll do. I wouldn't throw him out of bed for eating biscuits.
You know just where you are with a man like that. I just don't know where a man like that is!

IsoldeJaneHolland (Thu Jan 4 2007 09:35:19)
It was good casting. I own the Criterion Collection DVD and a film
historian doing commentary decribes Livesey's voice as "warmly brown."
I never thought of voices having any particular colour, but it's true!

Stan-64 (Wed Dec 5 2007 14:03:29)
I wish I could live inside Roger Livesey's voice.
It would be safe and warm and wonderful in there.

jem132 (Sun Dec 16 2007 22:34:46)
I love the guy. He's just the sort of man you could imagine yourself growing old together with.
Mmmm...where are the Roger Livesey's of today?
