Sussex University accepted me with my proposal to write about Amicus in the broader area of British Horror Cinema. With my supervisor, Andy Medhurst (as spotted on British Film Forever!), I worked out a research plan and Thesis outline. Various avenues got left behind (a vague idea to carry out some audience research on fans for example) and new ones opened (I did a bit more on the Doug McClure films than I had originally intended).

A couple of films eluded me (Just For Fun, Danger Route, What Became of Jack and Jill) - but I'm always on the lookout for these if and when I get round to turning it into a book.

Basically, it's an analysis of the films and their place in wider British fantastic cinema - trying to make an argument that they are reasonably consistent, that there is an 'Amicus' film, if not quite to the same extent that there is a 'Hammer' film. There were chapters on the anthologies, the non-anthology horrors, the science fiction films (I managed to say something reasonably interesting about They Came From Beyond Space and The Terrornauts!), the McClure films, Freddie Francis and Roy Ward Baker as auteurs, and a chapter comparing I Monster and The Beast Must Die to Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, Curse of the Werewolf & Legend of the Werewolf. I also managed to give papers on Michael Ripper (hurrah!) and another at a Widescreen Conference about the Dr Who films.

Good times....

Incidentally, one of my friends up there wrote hers on Vivian Stanshall and the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band (what I heard of it was very interesting), and another wrote about Lavender Hill Mob (tying it in to Queer theory I think - I didn't necessarily understand it all...)
Thank you, that's really interesting. A lot of 'offbeat' courses are, sometimes correctly, ridiculed. The way you approached yours demonstrates a real interest and, dare I say, passion for your subject. Well done.

Bats.

Default Hi there

Hi everybody, just joined the forum and want to introduce myself....
I work as a coach for a large electrical retailer and am an avid film fan
My favourite in The Italian Job, and to this end I organise a trip to Italy every year to show enthusiasts the film location used in and around Turin.
I am searching for snippets info, anecdotes from fellow film buffs regarding this film
Any news would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone!

I just registered here and thought I'd take a few minutes just to introduce myself and what not.

My name is Georgie (but you can call me Major, long story...) and I'm currently 20 years old, originally from Oldham Lancashire but living in Scotland.
I love all kinds of media, not just movies. I'm really into all kinds of music, tv, comics and so on too.
I also want to be an actress. I did a Drama course last year at Telford College Edinburgh, but due to personal reasons I couldn't finish the course and get my certificate.

How you all doing?!

Being an actor is very hard to start with but if you want it bad enough,, go out and get it....

Go for it Major! I had twelve great years working as an actor and loved (nearly) every minute of it.

Welcome to all new forum members.

Thanks for the lovely welcome and advice guys!

I must say it is a bit difficult at the moment money wise to get out and get some work, I guess the past 18 months in Edinburgh took it's toll heavily on my bank account.

I did however get some good advice from my acting lecturer. He said if I wanted to I could take the education route to get a job or just throw myself right in at the deep end and work as much as I could. Eitherway, it's still word of mouth that get's you noticed.

Hi I'm new to the forum too! Big fan of films generally but British black n whites are a must, just so watchable. While I'm on can anybody throw any light on the films of the Demarco brothers?
