John Mills. What an actor, eh? Lived to be nearly a hundred. And a lovely wife.

Hello everyone. I like heaps of the old pomie films. Noel Coward's In Which WE Serve was a classic . I think I could just about recite his speach to his crew at the end of the film

Thank you for the welcome, looking through the threads I see some members are familiar with the many 'character' actors of yesteryear, many of whom I'm a fan of such as Cyril Chamberlain, Ruth Kettlewell, Esme Cannon, Marianne Stone (more 'bit' parts than anyone!) and my all time fave character actress Judith Furse (Dr. Crow - Carry on Spying)

I'm into Movie locations too, though when I've actually visited one it all seems much smaller in 'real ife'!

Hi Mark O - welcome to the site. I had the pleasure of meeting Matt Monroe many years ago;albeit a brief meeting, but I have met him. A superb singer.

I was just emailing to an American friend today and mentioned Judith Furse. She was a big lady so often got cast as the big butch lesbian type. But she could be quite elegant and she was a very good actress.

Check out her brief appearance as Dorothy Bird, the postwoman, in A Canterbury Tale (1944). When Alison (Sheila Sim) is standing there in her summer frock and announces she's the new land girl, Dorothy looks her up and down and gives a great "Blimey" in exclamation
Or her greatest role for Powell & Pressburger as Sister Briony, the medical nun in Black Narcissus (1947)

Judith was the daughter of Lieutenant General Sir William Furse and her brother Roger and his wife Margaret were both designers for stage and screen. Roger did the sets and Margaret did the costumes.

Judith didn't often get a lot of screen time, mores the pity, like she did in Black Narcissus and Carry on Spying. But even when she's only on screen briefly you always notice her. Like the WVS lady giving David Lodge a lift in The Cockleshell Heroes (1955). Or even the uncredited role as the Lady in charge of party from The Women's League of Health and Beauty in A Day to Remember (1953)

Wow!.......that's great Steve, it's good to finally meet someone who is familiar with Judith!
I'll start a thread on her in the Actors and Actresses Forum.
