To Kill a Mockingbird: I'm with you all the way. I recall from IMDB that we share our enthusiasm with Gregory Peck, and not only with Batman but also with Superman! (Clark Kent).

Default New here though the name is familiar

Hello all,

I'm new here, looking first for suggestions of Britfilms of the last 10 years good enough to rival in quality my own favourite since 'Get Carter!', 'Secrets and Lies'. I found the last couple of years of the 90's and first couple of the 00's to be great for good movies - though I can't think of any great British ones to rival 'Heaven', 'Rushmore', 'Happiness', 'Amelie' etc. The last 5 years has been pretty poor all round i'd say. Any suggestions of very good Britmovies from last 10 years or so, anyone?

Simon

Thanks all for your welcome. :)

The thing about To Kill a Mockingbird is I've always thought of it as the best film adaptation of any book (one of my all time favourite books) and Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch matched my view of the character when I originally read the book.

As a matter of interest can anyone suggest any other films that they think have been adapted as well as Mockingbird?

Cheers, N

Hello there

I think that's actually a tricky question, as a good novel should have entirely different characteristics to a good film !
My favourite film is "The IPCRESS file", mainly because of what it looks like, not because of the story. I've never read Len Deighton's novel, which apparently is very different.

I would say "The Third Man" matches the book very well, indeed I have heard that Graham Greene wrote it as a screenplay, then adapted it to a novel.

Same goes for me Boris, new to the site and not sure how to get myself a pic, but I'm hungry for Britmovie info and have things to say. I'm a fan of the Hammer and Amicus stuff as well and as the years go by am less tolerant of new movies - can't abide 'em now. Have become fascinated by films from the '30's - they have such heart! Have noticed that there's practically nothing broadcast from that era at all! Why is it? Channel 4 used to. I have a suspicion that '40's films will start to disappear over the next few years as well.

Default introductions

Hi I am a new member.
My mother was at RADA and my uncle was Harry Pottle the art director, so I may be able to help people that have questions. My mum was in a film with Elsie and Doris waters called "It's In The Bag" Still looking for a copy. Harry was either production or Art director on "39 Steps" "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" most of the Persuaders series some Avengers and loads of other stuff including "You Only Live Twice" I would love to have a documentary made on his life a s it is always all about the actors and the writers rather than the people who it all to life.
Please let me know if there is anything I can try and find out for you.

Ted Giles

Hiya,

Newbie here, found the site when searching for a movie for the OH that she watched as a kid and wants to see again.

Had a nosy round and theres some fantastic knowledge on here, look forward to joining in, my film influences are mostly 80s mainstream I guess but with some variations, eg Jack Lemmon films, oddball stuff like Jabberwocky, sci-fi of all eras, B&W war stuff.

Hello. I am new to this board and feel blessed to have discovered this wonderful forum. There is so much film knowledge floating around here it's mind boggling. I have been a classic movie fan since 1984 but only recently have I turned on to the British films. It's a shame so few British movies are available to us in the USA. I have really been impressed with the 40's and 50's output. Baker, Hawkins, Glynis, Price, Guinness, Portman are fast becoming my favorites. I look forward to learning about these films and their stars for many years to come. Thank you, Barry.

So now I'm back. I have films currently waiting to transfer to DVD from old VHS and also a list of wants that hopefully I can trade/buy through the members of this site.

Glad to be here.

Isn't there any being shown on Sky Movies Classics (http://www.skymovies.com/skymovies/classics)?

I know what you mean about C4. Used to be home for some real British classics. I don't think old films will disappear especially with advent of on demand films. There's bound to be a continuing interest.

Cheers, N

I hope that's so nleacy. recently abandoned Sky as the loop of old films they show is shrinking. read about ABC australia's great brit film schedule in another discussion. it would be nice if on demand was international and we could tap into such listings.

Hiya traverne. I'll be waiting with my wants list!

I must say hiya to barry too. If you think the U.S. is a bit short of brit films, you should check out our clueless tv & cable channels! I got most of my Gordon Harker gems from the U.S. so you're not doing so bad over there...
