In an attempt to encourage new members to participate in the forum film discussion we've set a 3 post minimum before you are allowed access to the 'Looking for a Video/DVD' forums. Rather than post 3 meaningless additions to meet the requirements, do please introduce yourself HERE and try to engage in the lively debates with other users. Thank you.

..... pressed "HERE" and found myself in a thread where someone had to create his own Introductions thread in October 2006.

I did initially think I might perhaps be the first new member in 13 months.

I'd like to engage in the debates, but the only searches I've tried so far all take me to threads opened under "Looking for a Video/DVD", so I'm blocked from all of them. I don't feel awfully encouraged, just at the moment.

Luckily I'm a patient old duffer of 55, and will probably perservere. Do I need to introduce myself twice more before I can join the fora which came up on the searches? Perhaps a seasoned member will advise me.

I wonder how many people give up a bit before this stage? Does anyone have the stats for new members (i.e those who have registered) who don't post any replies?

Hello to anyone that reads this,

Graham

PS No, Modbert, not thick at all.
Welcome Graham and don't be too confused. You should be able to participate in virtually any of the threads straight away - apart from in the Looking... forums.

If you don't see anything on the opening page of each forum that catches your eye, you can always go back a couple of pages to see what has been mentioned recently.

A good place to start might be Favourite British Film or Actors and Actresses - if you happen to start a new thread when there was a much earlier existing one, someone will link it into the original.

Hope that makes sense.

Enjoy it, it's great fun

All the best

The introductions thread was started by a user. But it has become quite a popular way for people to introduce themselves. Sadly we can't make a link to take you directly to the last posting in a thread. You have to fumble your way there yourself.

As Fellwanderer said, it is only the "Looking for ..." threads that are limited to more experienced users. There were too many people that signed up just to ask for a film and never contributed anything. Some of those were a bit dodgy, not sending what was promised in return (money or a swap) so the "3 message minimum" was introduced.

There are always some that join up and never take part in anything. That's the case on any email group or message forum. I don't think that the "3 message minimum" has much to do with that.

But "Hello and Welcome", I hope you enjoy your time here

Steve

There is a link which takes you to the last page in any thread and you can simply scroll down to the last posting, but then you might miss many interesting comments that have been posted over the preceding weeks, months and years!

I joined this forum quite recently and it took me a while to find my way around. I struggled with the fact that there is no "index of threads" in the main menu bar near the top of the screen. Eventually I found that if I click on "New Posts" I am taken to a list of recent postings (obviously!) and tucked away in the lower right-hand corner is a box labelled "Forum Jump" which shows the main categories. From there you can access a treasure trove of postings on all manner of topics; as Fellwanderer says, it is great fun, but... be warned... the hours just fly by and you might perhaps need to be reminded that other work has to be done... !!!

Yes, but that link changes every time someone adds another post to the thread. You can't make a permanent link to "the last post in the thread".

Other work? What could possibly be more important?
Finding your way around this, or any other message board, is always a bit difficult at first. But while you're doing it you should get an idea of the sort of nonsense we talk about.

Well, my work is - though it is film-related

Thanks for your support guys, it means a lot. I'm sure you can appreciate I've got a lot of cynical friends who think I'm mad but why not! Why shouldn't I chase my dreams?

You'll see me in a British Film early part of 2008 which was made by Syndicate Films earlier this year in Liverpool. It's called "Outlaws" and directed by Adrian Vitoria, it's based on Kevin Sampson's novel of the same name. I play a gangster called John Walker.

Some of you may already be aware of this but if you're not you can get some more info from Syndicate's website or from Outlaws

It was an excellent film to work on and there's a great collection of British actors in the cast. The director and producers were an absolute pleasure to work with.

Have a look guys, let me know what you think.

Darren Whitfield.

Default Thanks to Fell and Steve

Ta for the kind words.

I don't know if I'm enough of a film buff to make much of a contribution. I probably have more of an interest in animation (Norstein, Svankmajer) than regular movies. What brought me to the site was a TV programme - trying to help my wife out. She wanted to see if she could get a copy of a particular episode of "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" from 1966 - the violin music has (ironically?) been sort of haunting her for the last 41 years - I thought it would be fun to try and find out if anyone had copies. They do, although I'm not allowed to make contact yet.

I found the site by looking for links for the particular programme - indeed, I found a thread just for the series, although no recent inputs. So without the "Looking" thing, clearly a bit of a dirty word, I wouldn't have known the site existed.

I can't post attachments, it seems, or I would have signed off with a roadsign (sic) showing Yuri's hedgehog. I'll have a bit of a trawl on the site for animation stuff in a day or two - not sufficient time tonight.

We all start somewhere!

I know that I've picked up a lot during my time on here and widened my horizons - though still very firmly on the same course
