That's probably what you did to add this message. You can reply to a message, quoting the message you're replying to, by clicking on the button at the bottom right of every message. That's what I did here to quote your message. It's useful to quote the message you're replying to because a thread can often drift and be talking about more than one subject. The only restrictions are that you can't use the Private Messages, nor can you post requests in the threads Looking for a Video/DVD (Film) or Looking for a Video/DVD (TV) until you've got a bit of experience and have posted some messages in other threads. This will also give other members a chance to get to know you and so they'll be more likely to help you Welcome to the forum Steve |

Hi -
Just joined this site although I've been familiar with it for years - if you look up the entry on Michael Powell (as I'm sure you all have !), pretty much the entire text is taken from my book on the great man published by Batsford in 1996, which I found greatly flattering. It goes without saying, then, that I consider P&P the greatest of British film-makers - favourite movies of theirs are A Canterbury Tale, Gone to Earth and A Matter of Life and Death. Also very fond of Carol Reed's 30s to early 50s work, Hitchcock in England (I think he almost lost it completely when he went to America), Basil Dearden and practically anything with Alec Guinness in it. Looking forward to browsing the site and being outraged at other people's opinions !!! ![]() - James Howard |

Interested in your OU course - I did one as my final year in 1999 called 'Cinema & Society - Britain in the 1950s and 1960s'. Is this the same one ? There were so few of us on that course in the North West region that we only ever had one tutorial at Manchester University when about 6 people turned up. A couple of them spent most of the afternoon arguing over whether or not Katie Johnson's Mrs Wilberforce was a ghost in The Ladykillers (!) while another bloke insisted that Michael Powell's Peeping Tom was a disgraceful picture that should never have been released. Hope your group is a little more broad-minded and sensible !! Best wishes - James Howard

Hi to everyone,
This is my first post here, and I hope its the first of many. I am a big fan of films in general and television programmes of the sixties and seventies with some great memories of that era. I have a very special and personal interest in "Play for Todays" and certain plays made by ITV, and I hope I can find some answers to my questions on these boards. Thanks for reading this and best regards to you all All the best Stu. Last edited by Stu53; 23-05-2008 at 12:03 PM. |

Hello all!
I am an enthusiast for both British films (especially 1930s to 50s), and also music, so my favourite film (at the moment, it changes) is Things to Come, because it's (a) a great film (IMHO), and (b) has a cracking score by Arthur Bliss. Of course, I like films with music by less well-known composers or arrangers too! I hope to share thoughts & opinions about the British cinema of yesteryear, as well as more up-to-the-minute movies too. Best wishes, Paul |

First post for me too, I was totally unaware of the site, I found it after doing a search for "Butcher's Films". There is virtually nothing online about them, I appreciate they are low budget B movies but they are some of my favourites, if only for their period fashions and locations, they are unpretentious at least! They also seemed to attract some famous actors e.g. Harry H Corbett, Honor Blackman, Warren Mitchell. They seem to be generally unavailable but as they seemed to be rerun constantly in the late 1990s on ITV I do have most of them on video. Am also interested in other B movies from the likes of Bryanston/British Lion/Mancunian/Theatrecraft companies. I have found the locations section particularly interesting, let's face it, most films of that era were made in London, so up here in the North East am unlikely to know easily where they were shot.
