Hey, I'm an aspiring writer from Toronto and have worked on a few local student and independent films and well I was really just looking for a place to converse with other people who have a mutual affinity for cinema, which led me to here. Being that I've always enjoyed British film and television (particularly comedies), I felt this was as good a place as any to hang my hat so to speak.

Question

Found this web site through trying to find classic black and white films on DVD. Have always loved the atmosphere and beauty of film in black and white especially British, although the Americans didn't do a bad job either!

My friend and colleague and I have long and animated conversations where we talk in 'black and white' and are always rushing to 'google' when we can't remember names of actors etc. What did we ever do without our computers?

We have both been trying hard to find "Woman in a Dressing Gown" on DVD and this is what led me to your site.

Look forward to reading other forum members opinions and perhaps finding some hidden gems.

Hello Trish and welcome.
Have your friend and colleague (two people or both the same person?) and yourself discovered the Internet Movie Database?
It's very useful in finding half remembered films and it has lots of links for the curious to follow

Smile I'm new here

Hi, everyone, what a great site! it's nice to know there's so many kindred spirits. I'm a big fan of most British films and TV series, from George Formby to Plague of the Zombies, The Invisible Man to Blackadder.

Owdo to one and all! I have been researching British TV for most of my life but have always retained an interest in 'good' British film and directors (Woodfall, Ealing, Loach etc etc) as they often seem to overlap in cultural and contextual terms. I am here mainly to expand my knowledge on the more obscure areas of British Film, particularly the 'Mancunian Film Studio' and to also engage in the debate. Cheers, Ciggsy

Default hi!

Hello Everyone

What a great site - stumbled upon it several days ago and signed up almost immediately.

I've a great interest not only in British cinema/TV but in World cinema too. Used to teach Media Studies and my old University now houses Stanley Kubrick's archives - but my oh my - what a dump the Elelphant & Castle was in the dark days of the 1980s.

Did a thesis paper on British documentarist Humphrey Jennings but was foiled by restricted access to then-classified Governmental files. I wonder why all the secrecy?

Still I managed to meet Ken Loach, Michael Powell and dear Lindsay Anderson back in the day and corresponded with Ken Russell and the great French director Robert Bresson. Also met Sam Fuller, Bo Widerberg, Mel Brooks and Hitchcock titles designer and 'Phase IV' director Saul Bass, along with 'Citizen Kane' producer John Houseman. Umm ... Perhaps those were the days after all.

I'm a big fan of the old 'Play For Today' and British sit-coms such as Hancock and Steptoe. Big fan of Spike Milligan and Monty Python too.

Hope this account is activated v. soon - had to register again here under my partners name so moderators please take note!

Looking forward to getting to know you all, contributing and trading!

Hello one and all. This looks like a fun site with some interesting threads on.

My claim to fame in the Britmovie world? Well, the 1967 film "Robbery" with Stanley Baker, George Sewell, James Booth etc had a small part filmed at my house!

My Dad used to run a Pub (The Builders Arms in York Road, Battersea, London), which had a large yard at the back used by a car repair firm, and then our house was beyond that. The film company approached him to use the yard for a scene where the robbers screeched in in their getaway car. The best thing is they wanted to use our house a dressing room! We had Stanley Baker, George Sewell and all the others wandering around, and my Mum was keeping them fed with cakes and tea. They filmed for most of the day, and when it was all over I remember going into the Pub where my Dad had a drink with James Booth. Mind you it was lemonade for me as I was only seven.

It was a great day, but the worst thing was - they didn't use the scene in the final cut - It was really disappointing when then film was released and we all went to the cinema to see it. Still, it's day I will never forget.
