I suppose I should not be surprised that there is a forum for all those wonderful movies that I used to watch on a saturday afternoon when I was much much younger! Looking around at my collection of DVD's, I seem to have quite a few classic ones and many Elstree studio movies. My favourite of all time is "A Mouse That Roared" as it has a double meaning for me. But I also really love "The Forbidden Planet" and "Truly Madly Deeply" so I have an eclectic mix...

I like the modern stuff too, especially when the CGI is done really well.

I was astonished at how well the Lord Of The rings turned out, but I guess it could not have been made earlier than it was because of the special effects needed.

Caroline.

Default Woo hoo, first post!

I was looking for the thread to introduce myself but can`t seem to find it?

Anyhoo, i`m delighted to have found this site, i was googling for the location of Buggleskelly Station in Oh!Mr Porter and found my way here. I can be found on IMDb as LieutenantJohnChard, mostly on the Classics and Film General boards, you will see i`m a genuine film fan i`m sure.

I`m going to be revisiting The Green Man now, i have been on a bit of a Gilliat/Launder kick lately, so in i go!!.

Default Hello

Saying an initial HELLO to the forum...

I used to live on the A Canterbury Tale film location, moved to the Matter Of Life And Death film location... and now live, well, no one has made a movie here yet!

Anyway - very much enjoy classic movies from P & P and Gainsborough, and even some recent ones.

Nostalgia beckons at the moment with 70s TV.

I'm a professional housesitter(!) - so like to take familiar films with me and watch in a new situation.

Hi!

Default Introduction

Hello to you all!
Have just joined the group having, like so many members, stumbled across it while looking for information on a particular programme. "What was it?", I hear you all ask... It's John Romer's Channel 4 Series "Testament" which is one of many programmes I videoed when broadcast and am now transferring to DVD for (hopefully) posterity.
So, you won't be surprised to know that my main interest is in British TV documentaries, particularly on topography, transport, industry and science. My all time favourites were the late W. G. Hoskins "English Landscapes" and his Horizon programme "The Making of the English Landscape" which preceded it. Other all-time favourites include Ian Nairn's Travels, Bird's Eye View and Under Sail. I wish the the BBC would reissue these on DVD.
I also like many old TV drama series, the Rupert Davies "Maigret" Series and the Joan Hickson "Miss Marple" being top of the tree. The latter has of course been reissued, at an insane price, but the former is still waiting - in defiance of all the requests and petitions.
Again, you won't be surprised to know that I think the Seventies was the Golden Age of TV before political dogma and rampant commercialization wrecked it, reducing it to it's present dire state. Apart from sport, there's just one series on now that I bother to watch: "Sky High" (last one at 7.30 tonight!).
So I'd better stop, as I'm getting into my Victor Meldrew mode. Another favourite, of course!

New here, and terrible at talking about myself, but I'll make an attempt!

I've been a huge fan of British film - well British film, tv, music, everything, really - for as far back as I can remember. Growing up, I remember staying up late waiting to watch Hammer and Amicus films, which no doubt was a key factor in my being the great horror fan(atic? freak? fill in your choice of adjective here) that I am today.

I knew I'd found a great forum when I saw the poll on the home page."What is your favorite Amicus anthology?" How does one even begin to choose?!!

I look forward to taking part in some great discussions here!

Welcome to the site, Wallsallian! I'd forgotten all about Ian Nairn before you reminded me! Does anyone else remember him and his progammes? Fascinating, and he was a really original TV "personality" - though that word hardly applies to him, somehow.

I do also recall WG Hoskins, and have his book somewhere around - part of my Historical Geography coursework for my degree many years ago!

Default Greetings from a grateful new member!

As a longtime devotee of British cinema, I am delighted to have found this site!

Having spent more than 25 years in the broadcast industry, I now teach film, drama, and media in a local high school, and it is one of my goals to introduce my students to the rich treasure that is the British film-making industry.

I must admit, however, that I was horrified at having to list my "favorite" British film when submitting my profile. How on earth was I supposed to identify a single film when visions of everything from Local Hero and Lawrence of Arabia to Monty Python's Holy Grail and In Which We Serve (I'm a huge Noel Coward fan) were dancing through my head?

Curiously enough, I am currently directing a production of Journey's End and will be screening for my students a very fuzzy print of the 1930 film starring Colin Clive. (Why hasn't anyone remade this movie???) As a doctoral student in history, I've been filling my cast's collective heads with stories of World War I, in the hopes that seeing the film will spur them to new acting heights.

Again, am glad to be a new member and look forward to taking part in forum discussions.
