RIP Mr Hardwicke .... thank you very much for all your excellent work, which entertained millions of people over many years.
Oh no, what a shame!
A superb Watson to Brett's Holmes, I hope they are reunited now and solving all the mysteries of the afterlife.
RIP Edward.
Very sad news. A tremendous actor. He was excellent in everything he did, although I particularly enjoyed him in Colditz. RIP Edward.

Sad news.
He leaves behind some memorable work, including his appearances on stage.
RIP and Thank You
So sad that Edward has died. I will always remember him as Pat Reid in Colditz, and then a perfect Watson to Jeremy Brett's Holmes. Seventy eight doesn't seem so old. Rest in peace Edward Hardwick.

Excellent in that role - the character was called Pat Grant, although of course based on Pat Reid
Sad to read this. A great body of work and a very thoughtful and modest man by all accounts.
Unforgettable as Watson.
RIP Edward.
In the Colditz pic posted by Number 6 EH bears a striking resemblance to comedian Jeremy Hardy. RIP indeed and thanks.
Just read this very sad news ... Edward was an absolutely superb Dr Watson to Jeremy Brett's sublime Holmes ... Edward and David Burke were IMO the two finest Watson's ever. I could never choose between them ... I'm sure these two fine screen portrayals of Dr John Watson will never be surpassed.
I thought it would take an exceptionally gifted actor to equal David Burke's wonderful performances as Watson ... Edward showed just what a very fine actor he is, by matching David Burke's performances quite brilliantly ... it was an inspired piece of casting ... and the transition was virtually seamless.
Edward was splendid in Colditz as Captain Pat Grant (based upon real life technical advsor on Colditz, Major Pat Reid) ... Edward played Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the movie Photographing Fairies.
Edward's calm, finely judged, polished performances delivered with his lovely, smooth velvet toned voice were quality acting at its very best.
RIP Edward ... my dear Watson

Very sad news indeed.
R.I.P. Edward Hardwicke.
Edward Hardwicke is one of my favourite Dr Watsons, Edward and Jeremy Brett (my favourite TV Sherlock) made a great team in the Sherlock Holmes Granada series and have given me and many other Sherlock Holmes fans many hours of viewing pleasure, i was watching Edward only this afternoon in Colditz (a great series) on the yesterday channel, i started a Thread for Edward Hardwicke on Brit Movie.
A screencap of Edward Hardwicke as Dr Watson in the episode The Empty House (1986) from
the Sherlock Holmes Granada series.

Very sad news. A splendid Dr Watson. Enjoyed so many of his performances. He will be sadly missed.
Edward Hardwicke.

Wonderful actor who I suppose will be best remembered for his TV work in Colditz and Sherlock Holmes, but who made some memorable film appearances notably as a touching Warnie Lewis in Attenborough's Shadowlands and at the opposite end of the spectrum, in a well remembered cameo as the aggrieved Calthrop in Day of the Jackel.
RIP
So sad to hear this. Although he had been ill for some time you always think there might be hope.
Like many, I first saw Edward Hardwicke when he became the second Watson opposite Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes. He replaced David Burke but instead of simply copying his interpretation of the part he made it his own. I adored his Watson, calm, funny, cuddly. He even had a voice like warm butter which was as comforting as a blanket. Hardwicke was a superb Watson, especially opposite Brett on stage in The Secret of Sherlock Holmes.
I have only recently seen his turn in Colditz but was impressed - I also liked him as CS Lewis' brother in Shadowlands, and the irritated inspector trying to figure out why everyone except Graham Chapman gets murdered in The Odd Job.
He also seemed a very decent chap, modest, quietly professional and accomplished. He will be very much missed. Bless you Edward.
Sad news...I was only watching a re-run of Colditz tonight and realised.....like others I liked him in that BBC series, and Shadowlands, the latter of which I felt he was virtually the best performer
I always felt that one of the reasons he was so successful as Watson was because his face seemed even more familiar than did Jeremy Brett's, and so his role seemed to give the entire show a huge strength in depth. He was also up against some damn fine Watsons of yesteryear as well, just as Brett was up against the Sherlocks.
One time when familiarity had the opposite to the usual effect.
