Roy Baker (1927-2011)

The sound editor who began as an assistant film editor at Ealing Studios, passed away aged 83 in February 2011. It was not reported here at the time and only just learnt of his passing. It was Roy Baker that lead to his namesake adding the name Ward to his moniker.

At Ealing Studios, he worked on Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), Whisky Galore, The Blue Lamp, Cage of Gold, Pool of London, I Believe in You, The Secret People, The Cruel Sea and Out of the Clouds (1954). Later he went to work at Hammer as a sound editor working on Maniac (1963), Dracula Prince of Darkness, Rasputin, The Reptile, One Million Years B. C. (1966), The Lost Continent (1968), as well as their comedy fare and TV series'. He worked in the real of science fiction on such television shows as Space 199 and The Outer Limits. He became a foley artist in the 1990s with his last two credits being Croupier (1998) and Topsy Turvy (1999).

I worked with Roy quite a lot when I was in Theatre 5 at Pinewood in the early '70's, he was quite a character.
Although he was acting as sound editor, he would often join his wife, who was a foley artist, and help her out with the footsteps and effects on the films that he supervised sound editing on.
