    RIP Simon

Saw him many times on stage and he was always a distinguished presence. One year he appeared in the York Mystery Plays.

Sad to see this confirmed, the rumour had been floating around for a couple of days.

He featured in my two favourite films as the dashing Duke of Buckingham and was suitably splendid in the part.

"I probably could have managed, but my thanks to you gentlemen anyway."

I saw him on stage not so long ago in The Madness Of King George with Susan Penhaligon. He was a very good actor. I'm very sorry to hear of his untimely death.

Simon Ward was 'Donald' in the Wednesday Play, SPOILED, broadcast 28/08/1968, repeated 09/07/1969, but later wiped by the BBC.

In March, 1971, I was much-impressed by his performance in the stage version at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket.

He has an interesting footnote in theatre history in that he took over, at three days' notice, Stephen Fry's role in Cell Mates, when Fry did a bunk to Bruges.

Such sad news. I saw Simon Ward in the cast of Albert Finney's 'Hamlet' at the Old Vic in 1975. He was a fine actor who will be greatly missed.

He also interspersed his rehearsals and early performances with press interviews and writing pieces for the press himself (he was also a book reviewer for the Sunday Times). Simon Gray and others were astonished at his nerve and speed of mind during that difficult time.
