I was elated the other day. The scrap man that comes round (in a van of course in this modern world) now plays the Steptoe and son theme tune as he drives around. Hurray!

I may suggest this idea to my landord's contractors, that they should play themes from westerns![]()

Whenever the "Rag n Bone" man came round when I was a kid we all used to
sing it (if that's the right term). You could see the poor guy getting upset &
muttering to himself!![]()
Did a lovely walk today. Parking my car outside The Forester's Arms in Kilburn,North Yorkshire,my mate,Chuck and I did a seven mile circular walk, going through the lovely little hamlet of High Kilburn and down into a little valley, then up and down to a hamlet called Oldstead.
Climbing up a track with commanding views of the vale of York to the west and rolling hills to the east. In the field below were Yorkshire Exmoor ponies. We then came across a little chapel, built by a man called John Bunting during the 1950's. The story behind it,I don't know, but it is something I am going to look into. It is in a place called Scotch Corner (not to be confused with the Scotch Corner on the A1).
We continued going by a forest and doing a bend before hitting the A170 and going into the forest before meeting the Cleveland Way and walking around the cliff which is home to a gliding club and watched a plane take off and land pulling gliders into the air.
Walking past the big White Horse,we descended down some steps to the car park and then down a bank back to Kilburn.
My mate had half of John Smooth's hand pulled beer and I had a pint of lime and water (honest!). A lovely pub with a nice looking menu.
Kilburn is also home to The Mouseman,a local who carved mice out of woodwork.

Unable to sleep the other night, I took a trip across London to Essex and had a walk around the streets where I grew up.
I started down the road where I used to live to find the first house I ever remember.
I couldn’t believe that they’d completely changed the front of it and replaced a lovely double porch with just a door and window! I was going to knock on the door and ask if I could see how that had changed the inside – but I didn’t think they’d appreciate that at 2am!:
I don’t remember that side gate………..
Carrying on up the road and around the bend, I saw that the open land to the right - where we used to play, had been built on:
…….I remember a light aircraft landing there once too……….
I carried on walking around until I reached the main road, passing a pub/Harvester on the left that I’d either forgotten was there or, as a child, hadn’t noticed and another pub on the other side of the road.
I then crossed the road using the same zebra crossing I had used to go to and from school:
As I climbed the railway bridge, I saw that my school had been replaced by a small housing estate called, appropriately, Old School Field.
I turned to look across the road – and couldn’t believe that the old WI hut, where we had our school medicals and inoculations, was still there in exactly the same place!:

I carried on over the bridge and looked down on the railway line, remembering the times when the grass used to catch fire from passing steam trains and the whole school turned out to watch the fire-engines:

Looking round, I could see the familiar bell tower of the church where my brother and I were christened together, so I headed there next, across the green:

Opposite the church, I had a quick look for the place where my mother used to serve lunches to trainee teachers – it’s now a psychiatric hospital.
Then I looked across to the church:

....and it took my breath away.
The site has been used for worship for over 1,000 years and the font dates back to the early 13th Century.
By this time I was exhausted, so I closed down Google Maps, switched off my PC and went to bed!![]()
