Still a slushy and powdry winter wonderland at home but in Central London, nothing .
My new kitten, Poppy, had her first experience of snow when she went out last night
A bit hesitant at first but with a bit of encouragement telling her it was safe she bounded out into the night to explore this new thing that she had never seen before
(she's a bit bigger now, but still cute)

Not much snow or ice here in West London. Slightly scary Saturday night though as the tubes stopped running on our stretch of the line and we got through on the last one. Amused at the total ineptitude of TfL in the face of adverse weather.
A propos of nothing... My DVD player just died. Not necessarily a bad thing as it was really old and hadn't really enjoyed opening and closing its tray for months ... So my question is: Is it worth replacing it with a blu-ray? I mean really? And is there a recorder out there that is recognised as the one to buy of you're in the market?
In a word, what should I buy?
And in another word, is there actually a thread about this very subject?
I haven't moved to blu yet as I can't find a cost-effective recorder. Plus I'm not convinced yet about the merits of switching. And in didi DVD land all I want is something to play my collection on and record anything I want a copy of. I also realize that in watching mainly classic films and TV much of what I have hasn't (and probably won't) be made available in a higher definition format.
I went for DVD plus hard drive instead when my DVD/VHS combi died a year ago. I would say though that whatever you decide, take your time and shop around.
Hi,
I think the sound advice conveyed is sensible. If you keep up with the latest gadgetry, you will spending a fortune evryday. I think it best to wait until you need whatever; and assess what is available to buy. Assuming that you can afford it.
Alan French.
I thought it was getting a bit cold. The snow is back in SW London

Thanks Didi and Alan. I can't afford anything at the moment, so I shall shop around with my hands in my pockets. I'll probably end up NOT going blu-ray because although I believe people who say the difference is phenomenal, I don't believe that it is the last word: They'll present us with something else in a year or so. All I really 'need' is a player that plays all regions. And doesn't argue with me.
If all you need is a player, rather than a recorder, you can get one for about £25 that can easily be turned multi-regional - just google 'name of player multi-regional codes' or similar before you buy just to make sure.
Tooting was a winter wonderland this morning though a couple of miles away there was no sign of any snow at all

..and of course while everything essential skyrockets through the roof in prices, technology prices do seem to keep coming down

A lovely pic of snow and water Cap'n, I've always dreamed of dipping in steaming Icelandic Geysers whilst the snow is around me, looks like I don't have to go that far!, though I won't get the steam it'll be nice to have a swim in those arctic type surroundings.
They most certainly do Arfur, in the 1962 Olivier film 'Term of trial' Sarah Miles is a bit peeved that her parents have just spent £90 on a new television instead of on her and her sisters welfare, that works out at £1,579.50 today, wow!![]()
I feel really sorry for these people.

Crikey! Poor (though naive) chap
Father of three Zhiping Zhou says his self-built Braybrook home was seized by the Sheriff and sold without a reserve price, and without his knowledge.
It was sold because he had debt a $96,660. It was a debt incurred after going guarantor for a friend on a failed deal. That friend failed to pay, and is now in China.

Feeling very cranky and irritable today. Even the Bafta red carpet stuff is getting on my nerves. Just thought I'd share that with y'all.
