One of the greatest B-sides (or was it a double A?) has to be 'God Only Knows' by the Beach Boys which was on the flip to 'Wouldn't It Be Nice'.

Seems such a waste, 'God Only Knows' would have been a huge seller in it's own rights.

Dave.

I'd plump for Revolution as one of my favourite b-sides and Beatles tracks.

I'd never heard of The Eclection so I looked them up on amazon. There is one CD listed with samples. I have included a link with this post. I had a listen, great stuff, cheers penfold .... my order is already in.

Bats.

ps - reading one of the reviews it says that one of their members morphed into Georg Kajanus and formed Sailor! You learn something new every day .....
The other male vocalist was Trevor Lucas, who married Sandy Denny and was with her in Fotheringay and mid-70's Fairport; the drummer was Gerry Conway who married Jacqui McShee of Pentangle and is currently in Fairport....
The holy grail for Eclection fans is the edition of Colour Me Pop they did....but apparently it was wiped. If you get hold of the wonderful Small Faces edition, it's announced as next week's programme...you saw them live Jackdaw....I'm envious. They do have a West Coastish sound...I think they were the only Britain-based band on Elektra.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

There was the odd occasion where a B-side drove the sales and became, effectively the A-side wasn't there? The particular example I seem to recall was Gary Glitter's breakthrough single: Rock'n'Roll parts 1&2. I think the A-side had some singing on but the instrumental B-side was the one that ended up being played on the radio and made it a big hit....... I might be wrong........

By the time you bought the singles, you often preferred the B-side because you were sick of hearing the A.

Nope .. you're dead right, the intstrumental was the one that was always played on the radio, and in the local youth clubs etc around here. In those days Glitter was almost God-like ...... how little we knew.

It's the other way round, Dave.
'God Only Knows' was the A-side, so 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' must qualify as one of the best B-sides.
It's a bit tricky here though, as both tracks were taken from an album, not recorded as two sides of a single.

Ah ... was this the beginning of the infamous double a-side ... what a great marketing ploy ... play one side to death on the radio until sales drop, then flip it over and boost sales ... there were loads of these in the 70s, but I can't remember any at the moment .

When released in Australia the A-side was 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' and that tended to get most of the airplay over here at the time.

If I remember correctly I think the price of a single back then was only $1 - and we used to complain that the price was too high.

I've discovered that the Eclection album of the same name (released 1968) is currently available on ITunes.
Great for anyone to sample and download.

Default Besides

GIRL OF MY BEST FRIEND was a b-side but also charted on its own in the New Musical Express.
Check out I WAS A TEENAGE CHART FREAK . It lists all the NME 60s hits along with all the b-sides.
