I think there does come a point where there is just no more that you are capable of doing. It may not have been that much fun in Poland during the Soviet era but another ten years of slaughter was perhaps not likely to have been preferable...... We seem to be trying to making up for it at the moment....

I agree. I initially wanted to say 'ironic' but at the time the word just would not come to mind.

All my life I wished I was Jewish. I adore the Jews... I'm proud that my Paternal great Grandfather was a Jew - though I know it doesn't mean much as far as my blood line goes.

However, I think this is making a bit of a mountain out of a mole hill... I refer to Marky's opening phrase rather than the Holocaust which could not be a larger nor more terrible thing.

The most offensive thing in this thread is the Flaki!!! If Marky spoke out of turn, have patience with him since I doubt he ever meant to offend.

Is it Rosh Hashanah? I'm not 100% sure when it falls this year... but its near, I think.

In what way is this the "holiest of days" in the Jewish calendar?

That's not until the 23rd (by our calendar)

It varies from year to year... I took a look around the internet and I think it may have started on the 12th of this month this particular year (at sun set). I may be mistaken... I only know very little about Jewish festivals.

I looked it up. The Wikipedia says Rosh HaShanah is on the 23rd this year

I think you were looking at last year (2767 - 2006-2007), Steve. I think that this year is 5768 (2007-2008) which says Thursday 13th September.

The 23rd is on a Sunday this year... whereas in 2767 it was a Saturday as stated in Wikipedia.

So Thursday 13th September is the start of Rosh HaShanah, I think. (Applogies if I got the capital letters in the name wrong last time, Orpheum).

Kursk was the largest tank battle in history and the end of the German blitzkrieg tactics. However, the real turning point was a few months earlier at Stalingrad when the Germans sufferered their first major defeat in the war. Ironically it was the name of the place that made Hitler determined to capture the city. Stalin was prepared to sacrifice thousands to protect the city he'd named after himself instead of falling back to a defensible position on the other side of the Volga.
