Asked to nominate their favourite books, William Hague, Lord Mandelson and Nicola Sturgeon all chose a biography of Abraham Lincoln.

What cross party support did Lincoln have? The Democrats fought him fiercely. He put in his cabinet many of his rivals, but they were all Republicans. And they were an unruly bunch that were often as much of a pain in the neck as the Democrats.
Why did Lincoln lead the North into war with the South? To free the slaves? No, to preserve the union. The southern states wanted to break away from the union and Lincoln wasn't going to allow that even if it meant civil war. The freeing of the slaves was a side effect to his primary desire to preserve the union
