I recall Steve Davis winning one when he made TV's first 147 in Lada Classic in 1982!

That is one thing that has always amazed me about the UK.
How can so much beautiful countryside be available to enjoy in such a small and "overcrowded" country.
The history and the beauty of the UK can melt many a heart.
I hope such areas will be preserved and that housing estates will not take the place of this green and pleasant land.

I have always said that if I returned to live in the UK it would be to live in one of the many idyllic villages spread throughout England.
That is if the increased crime rate hasn't already penetrated rural Britain.

Fast growing, but still quite small although they get a disproportionate amount of publicity

There is a lot of countryside and it's kept so beautiful because it the farmer's "factory floor". There's hardly a square inch that isn't worked in some way. They get special grants to leave in place and preserve the hedgerows and "wild areas" near the fields that are more obviously under cultivation or they all would have been grubbed up and it'd all turn into a huge prairie.

Village life is very nice, but you have to put up with far fewer facilities than are available in towns & cities. People like the TV companies and mobile phone companies advertise that their signals cover a certain percentage of the population, not a percentage of the land. A lot of small villages are in areas without a good TV signal and with no mobile phone coverage. Post Offices and banks decide to close branches based on the number of people that use them, not by how useful, or even essential they are for local people. The electricity is more usually supplied by overhead line so is more prone to damage and consequent electricity failure.

You also have to get used to village life where everyone knows everything that you're doing and you're expected to join in village activities a lot more. There's more privacy in the crowded cities.

Welcome to Norfolk .

We are lucky. We live on the outskirts of Norwich and are only a couple of miles from beautiful countryside and 15 miles from the coast. We love living here because we get all the facilities of living in a city (our local amenities are excellent and Josh goes to a great local school) combined with virtually instant access to the country and sea sides. Friends of mine who live in small rural villages complain of exactly the things Steve has described. So do some who live in the larger villages and small towns. The only downside to living here is we do get quite a few local louts who make going to the local parks a no no because of their rudeness and aggression. They also tend to congregate around some local shops after dark, but that happens in villages too.

Norwich is a great city, although it has it's share of violent crime and is not the place to be on a Friday or Saturday night if you're not a drinker or a clubber.
