Being Autistic and having Swiss in-laws... However welcome they strive to make me feel over in Switzerland (which I appreciate greatly), I am always very glad to get back home to the place where I am not alien.

That almost happened at the start of the 1940s...

I'm not sure how it would stand up to my memories of the middle 60's.

I do love this bunch of people though

Don't think Perpignan have a football team, nearest is apparantly Carcasonne, about the same as Brentford, same distance from me as Griffin Park is now so will be at home there LOL.

Next nearest team is Barcelona, just an hour and a bit down the road.

Yep I am aware Maggie Mk II is in charge over there and that is quite scary having suffered at the hands of that bloody woman once already. However, hopefully the French won't stand for it the way we did. Fingers crossed.

I have to say, when I first saw this topic in the early hours, I feared the this would be a rough ride.

I must say I loved Fareham Bee's response; a complete antithesis of the reasons given in the original article.

Well done to Steve for picking out the mistake made by the original journalist. It casts doubt on other claims in the article.

There is a statement an an increased number of foreign visas being issued as though it all relates to 'fed up Brits leaving in droves'. No mention of the fact that many more young people are are going travelling around the world for a year at a time and often require around five different visas for their travels.

The increased cost of living may have had an influence on people but taxes have hardly risen. More like 'tax evasion' than 'high taxes'.

I must warn you not to expect all warmth and respect from the people around Perpignan. I had afriend who went to live in the region and had some experiences that were not that too far away from Deliverance.

I greatly admire my parents for their courage in making the decision to emigrate to Australia from England in 1965.
They had everything to lose. Many of my relatives thought that we would return to the UK within two years - with our tails between our legs. It didn't happen. Instead it turned out to be the best possible move we could have made.

There are still things about the UK that I miss and that will never change. Yet given our time all over again I know every member of my family would make exactly the same decision again.

We even get more Premier League, Champions League and England international football matches live on television here than they do in the UK.

Footnote:
The English 'Daily Mail' will soon be printing an edition every day here in Australia, including a 'Mail On Sunday'. When we start getting 'The Sun', 'Daily Mirror' and 'News Of The World' then everything will be perfect.

That strikes me as eight excellent reasons NOT to move to Australia!

Quite often the problem is public perception of rising crime, fear of terrorism and high taxes isn't born out by the facts. If I were to do a runner it would be to Canada - France probably has similar deep underlying social problems as the UK.

Mrs Bat wants to emigrate to Canada as she spent a lot of time there about 15 years ago. She found it to be a really friendly society with all the luxuries etc of the US (she lived there too) but without many of the the underlying problems faced by that society. Great countryside too, she says. Unfortunately my nursing qualification isn't recognised in Canada so the employment issue would be a huge hurdle to have to overcome. Besides, the Boy Wonder is settled and happy at school and his interests come first.
