There is no finer sound than a Welsh male Choir IMHO ,but the Billy Connolly suggestion raised by Sam Kydd is Perfect . I can't get the image of Billy connolly skipping around onstage ,out of my head

It made me think what are the Brits good at doing collectively ? then it came to me , "Laughing at ourselves " , OH If only there were gold medals for it

Anyway , All together now , Dah De Dah De Dah De Dah - Dah De Dah De Dah Dah

Even though I am an admirer of the Queen,I think our national anthem is like a dirge more than something to inspire. I Vow To Thee My Country would be better. Land Of Hope And Glory:An emphatic NO!

Thats definitely an emphatic no Marky B .I'm just curious as to why you are so against LOHAG ? I agree with you about "I Vow to thee my country " It is inspirational although I'm not sure it would work as an anthem .

For anyone who doesn't know what we're talking about, The Archers is a long running radio soap. Listen to the theme tune here. The theme tune is the main theme in this piece.
That's a beautiful music clip. (It's fun to read that John Peel appeared on "The Archers"!)

I hate "God Save The Queen" as the National Anthem but I always like showing the flag.
Matter of fact after looking at the picture above I couldn't help but stand to attention.

I've always been a fan of Clodagh Rodgers too!

As for 'I vow to Thee My Country', its use in the opening scene (and title) of Another Country gives it an odd set of associations, which I think I'd prefer to avoid for our anthem!

I did use to like it,but now I just cringe when I hear it. I like most of Elgar's works, his Nimrod always brings a tear to my eye. However,LOHAG just makes me want to leave the room or switch off the CD player.
Another piece of music I used to like, but now I can't stand it is Nessum Dorma:beautifully sung by the three tenors in Rome in 1990,used to great effect in The Killing Fields,it has been done to death since.

LOHAG always makes me think of the boxer John H Stracey, who used to enter the ring to it in the 70s. He used to run a pub near here, it's still called The John H Sracey, although he has nothing to do with it now.

Just listening to The Now Show on BBC Radio 4
. They must have been reading this thread because they did quite a few pieces on why this is such a great country - even dead canoeists want to come back to life and live here

Seaton Carew is a few miles from where I live - so it is a hot topic at the moment around this area. It has put Seaton Carew back on the map, even though for the wrong reasons - mind,if you know Seaton Carew, you can't think of a right reason.
