Yep I am aware Maggie Mk II is in charge over there and that is quite scary having suffered at the hands of that bloody woman once already. However, hopefully the French won't stand for it the way we did. Fingers crossed.
My good lady & I, aim to go to France. Maybe Perpignan or Biarritz, anywhere down there cos the rugby is great! Mostly for the weather but cos we're hacked off with too much attention focussed on criminals rather than victims and too much time spent pandering to the cultural tastes of new immigrants at the expense of our own ......(sit back and wait for the flack.........)

We've spent a lot of time in France, away from the tourist spots! For my sins I spent some time in hospital after an accident. providing you try and integrate and behave as you would expect a guest to behave, we've never had a problem.

They tend to follow a 'France for the French first' policy. Maybe we could learn something from them..............?

Nah, a "France for the French first" policy wouldn't work well here

It seems to have been a complete turn-around doesn't it. Back then, poorish people left overcrowded, unhealthy Britain to seek a better life and future for themselves and their children. Now it's the smug, well-off who've made their stash on the backs of the working-man, who are off to sunny places where they can spend their money on themselves. Maggie taught them well.......

No such thing as Society........

Cheers James, not too sure if that was a compliment or not LOL, but thanks for the warning. I was down there in March and met nothing but nice, helpful and friendly people, and as I say I have some contacts down there, some French and a few English too. That said I don't want to be part of an expat type Sun, Watneys and fish n chips in the sun brigade, I want to adapt to the French way.

Completely agree Harley, I admire the way they have this do it our way or don't do it attitude. May see you down there soon then! Not too touristy round there,

Yet!

Love to Fareham but I'll bet the rugby is a better grade than the footy! Perps, Carcassone, Biarritz, Pau, Dax, Clermont, Toulouse.........

& They do Rugby League down there too......................

I would recommend Scotland to anyone in England wanting a very different political and social climate to what they have become accoustomed. Even at the height of Thatcherism in the 80s Scotland had at one point only one single Tory MP in the whole country. Edinburgh frequently comes on top in polls and research conducted on "highest quality of life", there is a superior state education system and independent legal system that amongst other things outlaws gazumping in the property market so very straight forward to buy a home there and property is comparitiveley cheap compared to the overpopulated south east of England. Scotland has its own parliament with powers to make sensible laws that have not much relation to whats going on in England. The SNP is the main political party in Scotland now, its leader Alex Salmond proposes to abolish council tax as it stands and base it on peoples ability to pay and income. The dreaded congestion charge was suggested for Edinburgh except the citizens there were given the privilage of having a say in the matter by way of a refferendum, the whole idea was of course thrown out. Im not really a political animal and don't particularly follow any party, but having lived in Central London for 24 years I would say things have and are changing and I don't like the way they are going.Sometimes I feel like London is becoming an oppresive Police state, especially under the insane megolamaniac, Ken Livingston! When the day comes when I don't have to work anymore for a living I will be out of here like a shot, Scotland, Spain or Italy, in that order!!.....

If things carry on as they are now in another 2 years Mrs Marker retires then we will downgrade on the house and try and spend 6 months of the year away from this now opressive country which is no longer the England I grew up in
