I agree about the shameful treatment of the Gurkhas. They are surely among the finest soldiers that Britain has ever been blessed with in its very long military history.

Perhaps this is a case where Her Majesty should have a quiet word in someone's ear.

I don't think you'll find many that will disagree with you. They have been treated shamefully.

Have you asked any Muslim women what they think of it? Many cover up by choice, not because they are forced to.

To your first question,no.

To your second,if I am talking to someone personally,(apart from those masked for medical reasons) I like to see their faces - the same applies to anyone wearing a crash helmet,or hiding their faces with a hood.

That's what you want, they might want something different and not want you to look at them. It depends on the circumstances as to who's wishes are granted

BBC NEWS | UK | Prisons reaching 'bursting point'
Sorry to back track, isn't the fact that prisons are bursting to overflowing a simple matter of practical mathematics rather than a discrepencey in statistics. My question is why should prisons become more vacant because the crime rate is dropping? Prisons would become more vacant if the crime rate is zero! Unless your sentence is six months to a year for murder for example its not really possible to compare yearly crime stats with how many people are in prison, that is just absurd isn't it? If a prison holds 500 prisoners and it is filled up with people in 1980 serving 20 years then they are still there in the year 1995. So even if the crime rate drops in 1995 to a very low figure there is nowhere for the prisoners to go because the jails are already full up.You can apply the same logic to cemeteries, we are all living longer but how come all the graveyards are filled to capacity and there is no room left!!

Passport officials a London airports have encountered problems with Muslim women refusing to remove their veil at passport control. I believe legislation is in place to eliminate future repititions of this type of scenario. Certainly a conflict of wishes going on there. In my bank there is a notice saying that all motorcyclists should remove their helmets before setting foot inside.....wonder why...

Three or four interesting TV events this week for this Thread.

There's a prog about the violent streets of London and the formation of the first ever police force in the 1700s-and-something.

Louis Theroux goes to San Quentin to check out the Cons.

and just for a bit of ex-Tory gloss: Portillo checks out methods of killing people legally.

Can't wait!......

Also I noticed Judith Chalmers' son is doing retrospectives on the resorts Brits used to leave the UK in droves for..... but maybe not permanently.

Don't they have any female passport control officers?
They already have different channels for UK (or EU) passport holders and "the rest". It should be easy enough to have another channel for those that wear the veil.

I wonder if this is a real story or another piece of journalistic imagining

Well you could set up a channel for Muslim women who don't want to reveal their identity to the male passport officer or you could also say that unless you are prepared to reveal your visage at passport control then in order to avoid any offence or confusion, please don't come to the airport in the UK!! (It might be Terry Jones in his "Life of Brian" guise.) I guess that would mean asserting the UKs cultural beliefs and status which seems to be a bit of a no no these days What is peculiar to me is that Muslim countries have no qualms regarding imposing their own religious, cultural rules and regulations on foreign visitors yet the UK is expected to make such concessions and is subject to heavy criticism for not playing ball. Its an old argument I guess. On the other hand it could be another piece of journo imaginings, but Im sure I read about a woman leaving the UK who was wanted for questioning by the police and used her veil to help her avoid detection through passport control.Whether its true or not I don't know.

I think most of what is reported in this line probably is the imaginings of rabid journalists. You certainly can't have a passport photo that shows you veiled and I can't imagine that any passport control officer would let someone through if they couldn't compare the face to the passport
