Has it changed very much?

It's still there if you look for it. But there aren't so many like Margot nowadays. In many ways that's a good thing but in other ways it is a loss. But it's good to know that there are still a few like her

And as for Felicity. Yes her eyes were wonderful. But it was the tight jeans and the Wellington boots that got most people excited. That's what won her the award of "Rear of the Year" in 1981

She really made me laugh. I looked forward to her entrance in every episode - and that condescending "Good morning Tom. Good morning Barbara"

I always thought she was good looking. I didn't know that many others did. She is not the usual "sexy woman" type - at least here in the US. Of course, she is almost unknown here, so I don't know how my countrymen would respond!

Britain has always welcomed immigrants. It's what makes it the place it is. And what has made it the place it was at any point in its history.

You're entitled to dislike whoever you like. But if you dislike all of one race then you're a racist by definition.

That's the myth, that they only fought against their own. But try telling that to the victims of their protection racket

As penfold said, this isn't a battle of wits, you're totally unarmed

Steve

You PC people are so predictable.

You never seem to validate why you make your crazy accusations. You all use the same tactic. That is to just throw personal abuse at anyone who dares to critisize another culture.

You always manage to avoid stating why YOU think it is so wonderful to have Gypsies thrusting babies at people on the tube demanding money.
Or why YOU think it is fine for people to pay health contributions and taxes only to have it spent on people who have had no input.
Or why YOU think it is right that an Englishman cannot fly his flag when their football team plays.
Tell me WHY you accept the fact that if an Englishman emigrates and returns after 6 months has elapsed, that he is not entitled to ANY, and I mean ANY benefits. But if a Serb hides in a truck and jumps out at Dover he can claim immediately.

Tell your pal I have not been engaging in a battle of wits. I joined a discussion that someone else started.
You and he are no more cleverer than I, as I am no more cleverer than you.
But if you need to make a discussion interesting then you have to make a counter viewpoint. Not just 'Well if you think that you're an idiot racist'

Happy New Year

Well, there's the likes of you, and there's the likes of me. For your information, I ran a bookies on the Walworth Road, Frankie was a customer if not a regular; ditto his missus, Buster Edwards' daughter. His cell-mate from Parkhurst, circa 1950's, was. Smashing old boy, pity he had his arm blown off by his accomplice in that armed robbery in the late 40's. Steve is right, that mythical gangster 'They Only Hurt Their Own ' is utter B******T, any shopkeeper or stallholder had to pay them off, and of course, all the customers subsequently had to pay inflated prices....they hurt EVERYONE who lived in that area. I heard all this from the horses mouth.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Loudon's got a big following over here for his excellent live concerts. I've been listening to his stuff since I was about 11 years old, and first saw him live when I was 15. A great pity that he now seems to be known just as "Rufus Wainwright's dad!".

I could never understand why he didn't get commercially recognised because his songs are masterpieces in observation and his lyrics are pure poetry. Many years ago I suggested an idea to use some of his songs to build a musical around, and years later it became the fashion to do so with the successes of Mama Mia and the Queen musical in the West End.

To Pustice
I am not a PC person and I realise that this country has many faults. However, as the father of a young boy, I am pleased that he will be brought up here. His school is excellent and, as he has special needs, the help he gets from the NHS is second to none. I can appreciate that you find some aspects of modern day Britain not to your liking and you are entitled to your opinion. However, as you do not live her any more, your opinion as far as I am concerned is devalued by your lack of first hand knowledge of living in Britain today. This is still a great place to live and no, I do not close my eyes to the crime and injustices that are all around us, but they happen in any society. If where you live is so amazing why do you need this ...

Greater Vancouver Crime Stoppers

... I'll tell you why, because all societies have problems due to the fact that human beings live in them. You made your choice to go and live elsewhere, so please do not stand in your lofty pulpit telling us what a bunch of cretins we are for wanting to live in a place we love.

That is really interesting to read. I agree completley, and so did many of my generation. When a new album of his was released (and of course, in those days, it was albums!) there were always a few who spread the word.

He was respected and always had a following, but never quite "took off". During his early years, James Taylor had "cornered the market" on that type of music - only of course Taylor was much more accessible and sounded better on the radio. Then the late Dan Fogelberg came along. I think that, maybe, Wainwright's songs are too intelligent and complex. "A Father and a Son" is so much better than comparable songs - but it did not receive "airplay".

A theatrical version of his songs is a good idea. They are so varied in theme, but the quality and vision are very consistent. But I don't know if the audience would be dancing in the aisles, the way they do to "Take a Chance on Me"...
