I do agree that the Daily Mail has become more sensationalist than the Sun in recent years, but I like reading the Entertainment pages on a Friday......

The royal swans are of course protected birds.
Piles of swan carcasses have been found in the area where the immigrants were living.
Police and RSPCA officers were called to the scene but the immigrants had fled before they arrived.

Eating swans? I didn't know swans were edible....

Swans are a hardy bunch. I just read this week that the Queen personally apologized to a child who was bitten - or nipped or chewed or partially eaten - by a swan. The queen wrote a letter in response. (It must have been a slow day at the palace) Maybe it was some sort of royal, high strung swan.

The child was very upset and sent a letter directly to the Queen. No courtiers getting in the way. Apparently the swan was also upset - or would not have upset the child. The queen and the chewed tot: like a weird update of The Mudlark.

So they know how to defend themselves.

Nice post.

Oh very nice. Thanks dremble.

So it means an "idiot". A "contemptible person."

What about this:

I found the name "Tim" followed by this definition:

Noun. A supporter of Celtic Football Club, a Glasgwegian based team with a Catholic following, hence Tim also referring to Catholics. Cf. 'hun'. [Mainly Glasgow use]

So the name Tim also means a Celtic Football supporter? Why?

I knew, just knew, that someone would post this story when I saw it in my local transport cafe's Sun this morning. David, have a look at the photo used to illustrate the story....supposedly of the remains of the cooked and eaten swan. Tell me David, do you think the immigrants cooked the bird, ate it, then rearticulated the neck and reassembled the ribcage and then reattached the feathers?? Yes, the swan has been stripped of flesh...by bacteria, maggots ...nothing bigger than a rat, at most. It's a dead, rotted-away-clean corpse of a swan that died, probably of natural causes, about two months ago., and nothing whatsoever to do with immigration...unless the swan was from overseas.

Tim Malloy was/is a generic Glasgow term for a Catholic (the Tim Malloys may have been the name of a gang, I'm not that familiar with Glasgow history). This has been shortened to 'Tim' over the years and can now mean a Catholic or a Celtic supporter.

Definitely. Most people keep away from them because they are taught the old canard (pun intended) about a swan being able to break a man's arm with its wing. Total nonsense of course but it means that most people leave swans alone.

As for "are they edible?", of course they are. They're made of meat like all other animals.

Thanks for the help - I looked it up. "A good Tim" was a comment used for an Irish immigrant in Scotland (at least when they liked the guy, I assume). Interesting.

Yes, that's its usual meaning.
A descriptive word for something that rhymes with Merchant Banker

It's the same with geese here. They are bad-tempered and hiss at anyone who gets in their way.

They also don't hesitate to run after people.

I don't know about broken arms though.

Well, yes - I suppose almost any animal is technically edible.

But swans look like plenty of neck and feathers and bill and bones and cartilage and rubbery feet to me. Not much meat...

What do you think?
Well I sent them a reply telling them what I think
But it's a moderated forum and they "don't post views that they consider to be off topic". What odds would you give me that they'll publish my response?

Is it off topic to accuse them of stirring up racial hatred?
Is it off topic to ask if they really called the police and the RSPCA, and if they then laughed at the reporter when they attended, and if they charged them with wasting police time?
