Is this how you carry out discussions/debates in Canada?

First you claim that someone has said something that they never said.
Then you prove that what they never said was wrong
Then you claim some sort of victory because your distorted logic makes you think you've won

Why do you think the Temperance movement existed?? The Salvation Army, the Methodists and The League of Temperance were reacting to the prevailing social conditions of the time. There were terrible problems related to alcohol abuse back then....the binge culture really is nothing new.
Did you see the Who Do You Think You Are? episode featuring Griff Rhys Jones?? He had been told his great grandfather had died in a train crash...whereas he had been killed in a post-pub street brawl.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Don't forget that prior to WW1, there really was 24 hour drinking - the licensing laws were so that munitions workers wouldn't be making bombs after breakfasting on gin and porter. Beer was much stronger then as well.

There was a Temperance League headquarters directly opposite Manchester University Student Union when I was there. It was always very amusing to be waiting at midnight at a bus-stop next to a stained glass window with the words 'You'll not regret the day you kept alcohol at bay' engraved on it. Last time I went past, it was a wine-bar which, alas, hadn't preserved the windows.

"Pub chain JD Wetherspoon has hit out at pop stars and sportsmen for fuelling Britain's binge drinking culture."

I agree ... every Wednesday night those bloody Girls Aloud can be seen crawling across The Whiffler car park with their mates, and as for all those drunken professional sportsmen in there .... it's a disgrace!

Oh! Thanks Marky. It's different in the US.

Now this conversation makes more sense to me.

I'd disagree with that definition of tabloid. It's literally true but, even though most papers are the same size now, nobody (except possibly Daily Telegraph readers) refers to the Guardian or the Indie as a tabloid. It's still about the quality and content rather than format.

Steve
Showing the diffrerences between two newsapers is distorted logic? How?

It seems to me that claiming the Guradian is at the same level as the Sun is distorting matters.

Having been away for nearly a fortnight and being in the process of catching up with this thread , I feel it is only right that my first post should pay Homage to the Regal Penfold , I always knew there was something speecial about you

With reference to the thread , I have just been to Breckenridge, Colorado, for 10 days , Clean air , Spectacular Scenery , beautiful town with every dining experience you could wish for at unbelievable prices , "Did I enjoy it ? "
I loved it ,and the Americans I met still have a healthy regard for us Brits ( could it be my influence ? ) I Don't know whether I am a sad individual but I was happy to be home ina rather grey and damp manchester , where if you show the slightest hint of self pity, you will be set straight with a smile , a few words of healthy advice , and a glint in the eye that says , " Life goes on "

I love where I live

I May be getting older ,but I refuse to grow up

And whether you're sick or healthy, happy or sad, you can always rely on the fact that someone, family or friend, will always lift your spirits in Blighty by offering you "A nice cuppa tea".
Marvelous.

Like the great line in a 'Bridge Too Far', when Sean Connory has just got back to his men and been given all the bad news. He's offered a cup of tea by his Batman.

He lists all the problems one after another and finishes with '...do you think a cup of tea is going help anything?'.

'Couldn't hurt sir' says the soldier. Connory's face says 'Good point!' He takes the tea.

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

I saw a news report about the Socialists getting elected in Spain, and one of their hang-ups is that now that the new build property market is on the slide there will be 4,000,000 immigrants currently employed in construction, many of whom may lose their jobs and go on the dole. The Spanish government will not allow this and so these people will be forced to migrate to a country which is more of a soft touch, guess where?

Also there will be an impact of this new regime on the thousands of Britons living in retirement bliss on the Costas, and in an effort to provide affordable housing for the Spanish, these interlopers could have their properties taken off them at a knock-down price!

So many who have fled the "horrors" of The British Isles may be forced to return but some will be unable to get back on the property ladder because their investment in overpriced cinder-block and rusty wire Spanish property will leave them with a considerable shortfall!

Another example of certain EU countries doing as they please, whilst the UK complies with every little sentence of EU law to the letter!

Personally I think we'd be better off leaving altogether and becoming another Switzerland. We can be self-sufficient in most things, and we trade with the rest of the world anyway so why shackle ourselves to an EU Constitution designed to frustrate and flaberghast all of us! As for defence, we side with the Yanks every time so if they ever wanted to invade France or Spain we'd be shoulder to shoulder with them!

"...the chairman of Littlewoods stores made a Keynote speech!"

I agree with you Sam, the more we get sucked into Europe the more I realise what a huge mistake we are making.
