Anywhere outside a big city really. I used to live in London and never even bothered owning a car. I live in a suburb, seven miles from my nearest big town now and life would be impossible without a car - or at least any sort of life I want to live.

I could cope with a horse and cart but there's nowhere to graze the horse and the neighbours would complain about the smell anyway.

The problem I suppose is that all our leaders live in cities or have enough land to gaze their horses.

When I lived in London I rarely used my car except to go away at the weekend, but to hop into town on a bus now costs £1.90 each way (2 miles) and to take my car it's less than 40p in diesel, and I have to own a car anyway to travel 40 miles each way to work!
Well of course, it depends how far out in the wilds you choose to live
Where my Mum lives in the wilds of west Welsh Wales, there is a bus that runs into the nearest town and back. But if you miss it on the Monday, never mind, there'll be another one on Thursday

The bigger factor is the way that people travel long distance. There's private transport on the motorways and public transport on the inter city trains. Trains are much more efficient at moving people of course but since privatisation are ridiculously expensive.

The motorways are good, and very useful, especially if you can avoid the rush hour. But they're never clear of traffic for long, even in the middle of the night when I prefer to travel on them.

Twenty five years ago the government wanted people to live out of town and commute on motorways, and now that we're all doing that they try and f*** us up completely by suddenly declaring cars as "enemy of The State"! What do they expect people to do, walk or cycle along the hard shoulder of a motorway to work and back (it would probably be quicker than driving)?

The only way round is to buy a car that is pre-1972 and then at least you get free road tax!

MPs are the biggest hypocrits and do you know that the Houses of Parliament are exempt from the no smoking ban!

The best thing we can do is all emigrate to Poland and start from a clean sheet of paper and build a half-decent country from scratch and rename all the towns and cities to English ones, and put a government in place that isn't just a bunch of "yes" men treading water until they've make a few quid as non-executive directors of banks and retire to the after dinner speaker circuit talking bullshit to gullible corporate clients!

We need to fight back against this dictatorial government's oppression of the people, solidarnosi!
I shop at Morrison's at Teesside Park and a few years ago, when we had no car,it was a case of hit and miss with bus schedules. When I did get a bus,it took forty five minutes to get to the park (via Stockton) and then I had to time my shopping,so that I could through the checkout and try and catch the next bus to Billingham. If I had missed it,it was another hour before the next one. So for this alone,it was up to three hours of my day doing the shopping. Now there are no direct buses to Teesside Park from Billingham,so I am afraid the only option is the car (or an expensive taxi run).
Like Sam said, there have been no alternatives offered, and of course the Chancellor is using the "green" issue to screw more money out of motorists (in six months time, anyway),even though there is still a solid counter argument that man is not responsible for climate change.

Eee, it's grim oop North
I think a lot of those complaints might be more fairly laid at the door of local government rather than national. In lots of other areas they offer free buses between the big supermarkets and all the local centres of population

Sorry chaps, but here for eight months of the year I use our steam railway. A resident ticket costs less than £40 . Can be used for work and going to Tesco, always punctual, though sometimes delayed when there is a cow on the line.

Also for cyclists and horse riders, the road manners on the island are first class. Everyone gives you time and space. The bus drivers are the best, considerate to the elderly and always go out of there way to be helpful.

Yeah. But having to have three legs must really drag after a while, right?

That's what is happening now, except it's those people from eastern europe who want to work and the good people of GB are putting them down for it.

My question: Why are they condeming people who want to work for an honest days pay when those that live there wont work?

In answer to my own question, I managed to download and have just watched the prog concerned and it's so shameful to see that the "yoof" of the ONCE mighty GB doing what they do best, SIGNING ON. And yet they would like to work as long as it's not with foreigners. And on this prog, the "yoof" that was being interviewed pulled out a can of Stella to show off his IQ, 5%.

Here in the Philippines I know so so many people that would love to come there to work, and like the Polish people, work damn hard to feed their families and to give a better quality of life, but many Filipinos will never have that chance. The British "Yoof" should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves, for they are the ones that are destroying the country, not the hard working people who come there to earn a crust.

I better finish now or I may have to change "My Mood" to something else. Am I glad I am not there anymore? Answers on a postcard please to.....well you know the address.

Graeme

I'd guess the IOM railways staff affect steam-age efficiency...
