I was dropping something off at a friend's house this morning and where she lives is opposite the infant and junior school I went to nearly forty years ago. Then a pang of memories came back to me:the classrooms, the teachers, the pupils, the smell of plasticine in the oblong tins.

I'm afraid I can't do that Marky as both junior schools I attended, my Grammar school and College have ALL been demolished to make way for housing.

Not sure I'd want to remember the smells of my junior school, I sat next to Farty Williams.

If you went inside then any sense of nostalgia might have quickly evaporated. Seeing the computer suite, interactive whiteboards, digital projectors and infants who are more computer literate than their teachers, would soon have had you realising that those schools are no longer the places they once were!

The rabbit picture on the peg for your coat, because in 1952 as a five-year old you weren't expected to read. And how half the class of 46 children wet themselves on the first morning through fear after being prised away from a doting mother. No nurseries to speak of, and very few working mums on our South london estate. Miles of privet hedges enclosing tidy council house gardens, and an indoor lavatory - bliss.

    regards
