We have always done OK with Toyotas. They may look a bit boring but they just keep on going. I wish I still had my little Corrolla .... I had to work away for six months so bought a turbo-diesel Rover for all the travelling. That's a good car too, but a really noisy tank!

Bats.

I had a Mitsubishi Colt for getting on for 10 years and was quite happy with that. But it finally needed so much work doing that it was cheaper to get a new car. I finished up with a VW Golf but any medium sized hatchback would have done me just as well. It was just a matter of finding one in reasonable condition at a reasonable price.

I don't do a huge amount of driving, mainly in London and the SE but occasionally longer trips out to the wilder parts of these island. I have just had a week off and visited friends in Somerset & then my Mum in Wales. That was about 650 miles in a week which is quite a lot for me. But the Golf behaved very well, even on all those Welsh country lanes, unmade roads and hills.

But I seem to have missed out on the gene that makes most boys fascinated by cars. To me they're just a tool that does a job. The only thing I ask from them is reliability.

I agree about the styling of cars though. Nowadays I just can't tell most of them apart unless I read the make & model on their badges/labels. Most are just a tin box with a wheel at each corner.

I needed to buy a new (second hand) car this year and asked a mechanic friend which small hatchback I should go for. He said that they're all much of a muchness.

Well one of the most popular and reliable is the Toyota Yaris, and they are rated very highly by the industry, but then some of the Kia range are very good and well priced and some have 5 year warranties! The Yaris though is good on the motorway and in town and very easy to park. They're not so small that they're uncomfortable because they have a lot of head and elbow room, and the styling is better than most. They are also economical and hold their value quite well.

My in-laws have a Yaris and they love it. They say it's the best car they've ever had. Toyotas are the business when it comes to reliability.

Ooh look, it's another car. Let me check. Yes, a wheel at each corner so it's just like most of the other cars as far as I'm concerned.

Unless it was on the road with those "Yaris" plates I wouldn't be able to tell it apart from all the other very similar hatchbacks

It was a suggestion and I thank you for that. But I only wanted something cheap and reliable and the make or model doesn't really matter. As my mechanic friend said, they're all very similar really. So that's what I got, something cheap but reliable.

Gosh you only see cars like this now on old programmes and even then they do not look as new and shinny as your photo does.
