Yes, the dreadful wail of the bagpipes, the tastelessly homely kitsch that is tartan, all those grim sandstone buildings, weather that's even shittier than England's, all those ugly accents - AND still they remain cheerful and patriotic.

I thought Edinburgh was the Granite City?

There's some nice sandstone around Liverpool I recall.

I'm pretty sure it's Aberdeen that's the granite city, because of the greyness of the weather and buildings, though I'm sure there's some very interesting buildings for architecture buffs to admire.

The building of the railway from Edge Hill into Lime Street took some doing I believe, a lot of natural rock to be cut through, the cutting looks impressive when on a train.

Aberdeen is known as The Granite City, or The Silver City, all the buildings are made from granite from the same local quarry, the colour is quite bright and silvery rather than drab and grey, its quite a unique look compared to other Scottish cities, it gives the city a bright, fresh appearance rather than a grey one. Edinburgh was know as The Athens of The North, there is an unfinished replica from the 19th Century of the Parthenon overlooking the city on Calton Hill. Edinburgh is mainly built of grey Sandstone not Granite, Glasgow is built mainly of red Sandstone.

Ironically the unfinished replica of the Parthenon in Edinburgh was never completed because the funds dried up, its also referred to as The Shame of Edinburgh. Your quite right about the structure in Oban, it is a victorian structure called McCaigs Tower, based on the Colisseum in Rome.250px-McCaig's_Tower,_from_the_ferry.jpg

Now one of Jersey's politicians is talking about independence, if the UK tries to regulate their offshore banking laws. And the leader of Plaid Cymru has said that Wales will be independent in a generation. I think she's very wrong there. Pro-independence Welsh seem to be even fewer proportionally than their counterparts in Scotland.

What I find ironic is that it seems the people who are most in favour of the new cohesiveness of the "European State" tend also to sympathise with these separationists within the UK.

But then this is no moor ironic than that those who tend to disfavour the "European State" can often be those who least sympathise with splitting up the historically cohesive national union... of the UK.

Not ironic - just Machiavellian! The smaller the units, the less power they have against the centre!

That because conservatives favour the status quo and dislike ANY change. So again, it can be seen as a logical position.

Somebody once nicely formulated the mindset of separatists: “Why should I be a minority in your country, when you can be a minority in mine?”

That would explain why the Cameroon is keeping us on the Euro Train....

But not how we came to be riding it in the first place.....

Apropos of which, I daresay Alex the knife will scythe into why the Cameroon wants a slightly more complicated question on the Euro ballot than he currently demands for the Scottish one....

Arr ye in or oot !! ....

Yes, and I AM a Geordie - not a "Gordie". I counted eight words, though - not seven.

OMG humiliated by the spelling bee clique You can always tell when they hit home. It's spelling or punctuation never anything original. Must have been one hell of a kicking.
