Does anyone have any recommendations for a lovely place in the sun for a week? Desperate to get away, but the only time possible co-incides with school holidays in July, unfortunately, so we're looking for somewhere as quiet and private as possible, within a couple of hours flying. We'd like a pool and to be near a beach, if that's not asking too much! Villa or small hotel would be perfect. Would be grateful for any suggestions.

That might be a tricky one, Windyridge. If the situation over there is anything like it is over here in the middle of summer, then there's no such thing as a place that's both quiet and near a beach. Good luck though, perhaps someone in the forum will know.

The Posilipo Hotel in Gabbici Monte on the Adriatic coast is a family run hotel with around 40 rooms. It has a small pool and there is a bus on rails to take you 10 minutes into Gabbici Mare which has fabulous clean beaches. It is also not far from Catolica. If you like your food (particularly seafood) it's a gourmets paradise. Google it and see what you think. Only problem is July !!!

I enjoyed a week a Vilamoura on the Portugese Algarve last September at the Hotel on the link, large open air swimming pool, steps away from the Beach (the little Cafe on the Beach does a nice toasted sandwich), child-friendly, help yourself Buffet at meal-times, Vilamoura Harbour is just a short walk away with pavement restaurants and a lively evening atmosphere, the nearest Airport is at Faro, about 40 minutes away, a Coach company leaves regularly for all Hotels, we flew with Monarch airlines from Gatwick, paid a bit extra for extra legroom and on-flight meals, couldn't fault them one bit, I'd definitely go again..........

I spent a month there when I was a kid (1987),the 'highlight' of my trip being my younger brothers attempt at playing 'crazy golf'-the incident in question regarding a sickle shaped wound, swearwords, and a variety of random round missiles.
