It's becoming more and more apparent that the honours system in this country needs a complete overhaul.
People should be honoured for a lifetime of unselfish deeds and going above and beyond normal duty in the course of their work - not just for playing sports and acting.

Branagh is probably the only one remotely worthy on the list. Tessa Jowell? That's a joke, surely?!

Branagh should be kicked out of the country never to return after his Frankenstein re-make....

Why would she be given anything higher? An average actress who has the opportunity to do lots of charity work. Good on her, but lots of people do an enormous amount of charity work, some, unlike Jenny Agutter, are under privilaged themselves.

April will receive one for services to trans-gender equality (it was always 'sex-change' in my day), I always used to confuse April Ashley with April Olrich when I saw her on TV, thinking she was a transexual, there's an article on Miss Ashley on the link...........

Obviously the second reason is the real one but it's my understanding that he was somewhat embarassed at just how money he made from writing lyrics for Andrew Lloyd-Webber and has given most of it away in trusts related to kids and music and stuff. Though surely he could have just used to to bring back Nationwide ...

I recall one of his little ditties Richard sang on 'Nationwide' was called 'We have statuary right of entry to your home', and he sang a comprehensive list of people who are entitled to enter your property such as the Customs and Excise, caused a bit of a storm as I recall as many people weren't aware of all the 'right of entry'.

Probably a few times during the last sixty years.

Meanwhile: as this is Britmovie - what's the latest plausible reason why David Niven didn't get any of the Honours from the UK for his acting work?

Presumably because theatre work has always been seen as of rather higher status than film (especially if you actually run a theatre) and Niv didn't actually spend much time in Britain after c1935. Honours to ex-pats like Julie Andrews is a relaltively recent thing (and not popular with everyone)
