It seems that the Russian courts are as free from political interference as in the UK however.

"I don't think that a verdict should be very severe," he said in remarks carried by Russian news agencies. "I hope that the court will make a fair, well-founded ruling." Courts in Russia closely heed signals from the government, and Mr. Putin's statement sounded like a clear sign that the verdict for the rockers might be milder than anticipated."

At 8.32 am this morning the BBC Radio 4 Today programme broadcast an interview on the subject with the eminent Russian academic Robert Service who informed the nation that the Russian language can't cope translation-wise with the word 'riot' or even the word 'pussy' . "What is pussy?" asks the academic.

Reading the news from South Africa as the post-Apartheid nation tries to sort itself out, it's pretty trivial stuff though.

I imagine the girls will be released quietly once the internationale hue and cry has died down. I wouldn't be surprised if Putin issues a pardon or something to get Russia back in everyone's good books, as it plods gradually out from its near century of Soviet tyranny.
