Since 2000, I have lived in attic flats. When I lived in Cupar, my dining room window and adjacent lamp-post were frequently visited by jackdaws and crows. Some of them would sit there for hours, surveying the street below, and it was possible to have 2-way conversations with them in squawks and chuckles through the window. Jackies are especially endearing, with their inquisitive blue eyes. They are all very clever and amusing. The crows in Church Square, St Andrews, have a habit of 'dancing' around you if you are eating a sandwich on the benches there. They demand to be fed. Far from being "dull and black", as some people think, they are very lovely when the sun catches them: their feathers have all sorts of iridescent shades of blue and purple in them.

Here in Glasgow, my friendly neighbourhood corvids are magpies, who visit the balcony and the roof, and always sound as if they are chuckling to themselves: very handsome birds, with their creamy white, black, and iridescent blue-green feathers.
Do you have vast flocks of them like we do down here in SW London?

With magpies it used to be "One for sorrow, two for joy" but what is it when you see a flock of 20 or 30 of them?

And what about crows? We have a lot of those as well. The old saying used to be "A rook on its own is a crow. A crow in a crowd is a rook". You got rookeries but not croweries, crows were solitary birds. But now, there are so many of them that the crows are forming colonies. I have a stand of 3 oak trees at the bottom of my garden and they have 6-8 crow's nests in them

A soft spot for Hammer...and horror...and Dave Prowse...a gentle creature despite his fierce appearance...which connects to a band...plus the lascivious look seemed apropos when posting to The Sexiest Actresses thread...

It's the Health and Safety approved version.

It's global warming - they melt more quickly now. Playing snowballs has never been safer.

We have more magpies and crows around here. Have never had any truck with any superstitions about them: I just find them clever and amusing. The magpies aren't in flocks, but potter about individually or in small groups. The animals and birds hereabouts are very bold (if not plain cheeky!) because no-one hurts them, and quite a few feed them in the Botanic Gardens.

Does anyone know the origins of that rhyme ... I had only ever heard it sung using magpies, but the US rock band 'Counting Crows' use the rhyme in one of their songs using, unsurprisingly, crows. They claim the song originated in a 1973 novel 'Secret of the Seven Crows', but that post dates the 60s TV series 'Magpie', which had it as it's theme song.

The saying predates the TV show Magpie by a long way. It goes back into the dim and distant. Here's a reference dated 1846

The original was more like:
One for sorrow: two for mirth: three for a wedding: four for a birth: five for silver: six for gold: seven for a secret, not to be told: eight for heaven: nine for hell: and ten for the devil's own sel [self]

That was probably a bit too scary for a childrens TV show though so they changed it to the version that most of us know

The Magpie (Pica pica) is a Eurasian bird although there are similar corvids in places like Korea. I don't think they have any in the States so they probably just adapted the rhyme to be about a bird they do have, like the crow

Americans have Blue Jays, which are even prettier than our Jays (another pretty crow).
I encountered some delightful Magpies in the Monferrato 2 years ago.
What struck me very much in Russia was how the Hoodie-Crow seems to be far more common than the plain black Crow. Hoodies always look to me as if they are, in fact, Grey Sleeveless Pullover Crows, because their wings and heads are black.
