Default Oasis Top Album Poll

I know, I know - yet another meaningless poll but at least it's a talking point.

A recent survey run by Q Magazine and HMV asked people in Britain to name the Top 50 Best Ever British Albums.
Over 11,000 people are said to have taken part in the survey and the results are surprising to say the least.

Oasis claimed the top two places in the poll with their albums 'Definitely Maybe' (No.1) and 'Morning Glory'.
Radiohead came third with 'OK Computer'.
The Beatles 'Revolver' album only finished fourth.

Oasis bigger than the Beatles ????

Dave.

I doubt many Beatles/Stones/Who fans, shop at HMV or read 'Q' magazine.

'Lies, damn lies and statistics' I think it is DB.

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

Default The poll to end polls

Greetings pop pickers,

I do read the music press but haven't bought "Q" magazine for a couple of years, as nearly every issue seems to be based around a poll. Top 100 artists of our time. Top 50 songwriters. Top 75 concerts. Top 1000 meaningless polls. ...
Who cares? If you have got time to enter these vapid polls you need to get out more!

Oasis made a fair old dent in their time and had a lot of likeable swagger.
Comparing them to the Beatles / Stones etc. is very premature. Always thought they were a poor man's Beatles, whom they have often quoted as an "inspiration".

I seem to remember an internet poll for the best ever Man Utd player which, I think, was won by Eric Cantona! Obviously, Law, Charlton and Best had the misfortune not to play in the internet age!

Like the Oscars, the Bafta's and the like, these polls / awards are meaningless.
Are we so lazy that we need to use polls to decide what we like or should like!

Regards,
Edward G

It's a long time since I saw Q magazine. A very L-O-N-G time. But when I last saw a copy it was probably the most likely publication to have been read by fans of bands from that era, reading about bands they might like 'currently' like Oasis or Ocean Colour Scene.

My teenage niece always considers that the latest film she has viewed in the cinema is the greatest she's ever seen. Such considerations should always be made in hindsight rather than the heat of the moment.

But with these surveys most people asked have the memory span of a gnat with severe learning difficulties, and so anything older than Oasis would not be stored in the little grey cells!

Compared with the prolific and imaginative output of Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards, Ian Anderson, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Paul Rodgers, Queen, Tom Waits, The Clash, Metallica, Abba, Elvis Costello, Paul Weller and a thousand other excellent bands/singer songwriters over the past 40 years, Oasis are just a pub band!

Both Oasis albums contain 8 or 9 strong songs, whereas even the lauded Sgt. Pepper's is a somewhat patchy affair. Between 93-96 they were even churning out b-sides better than many bands a-sides.

This reveals more about Q readers and HMV shoppers than quality albums.

I think that Oasis will always figure highly in these sort of polls for a good few years yet.

Although I never really liked them they were absolutely everywhere in the mid-90s and there was a point where you couldn't leave the house without being assailed by (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

Such was their ubiquity that Our Friends in the North concluded with a zeitgeisty bit of Don't Look Back in Anger when it had only just reached #1 in the charts!

I don't know anyone who likes anything they did after the first two albums though.

Now Pulp's Different Class only at #39? That is a shocker. Best British album of the 90s in my book...

If I was offered 1 studio album for my Ipod (so no Beatles red/blue etc) and it was Revolver/Pepper or DM/WTSMG I'd probably go with the second Oasis cd. It's not about which is the most innovative or accomplished (then OK Computer would walk it) but which is the most enjoyable. (and my beloved 'Listen Up' failed to get on either album).

And Primal Scream's Screamadelica should be in that 50.
